Choose one article associated with your topic for the Argumentative Research Paper
Carefully read the article.
Write two well-developed paragraphs responding to the text. A well-developed paragraph includes at least 8-15 sentences. Responses should follow MLA guidelines and be typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman, 12 pt. font. Include the name of the writer(s) and the title of the article in the first sentence of the first paragraph, along with the thesis/main idea of the article you read.
Paragraph 1:
The first paragraph should be a summary of the text or article. Do not analyze or put your opinion of the article in this paragraph. Instead, explain what the author is arguing and to the readers. What is the writer’s purpose, message, or theme? The main idea here is to show me that you read and understood what is going on in the text. Use verb signal phrases and effective transitions between writer’s points. You must use one direct quote in this paragraph and provide an in-text citation. Since this is a summary, you must have an appropriate in-text citation.
Paragraph 2:
The second paragraph should be an evaluation and critique of the article. You should explore whether or not the author effectively supported the thesis or main idea of the article. In the second paragraph, consider the following questions:
Is the title of the article appropriate and clear?
Is the abstract specific, representative of the article, and in the correct form?
Is the purpose of the article made clear in the introduction?
Do you find errors of fact and interpretation? (This is a good one! You won’t believe how often authors misinterpret or misrepresent the work of others. You can check on this by looking up for yourself the references the author cites.)
Is all of the discussion relevant?.
Has the author cited the pertinent, and only the pertinent, literature? If the author has included inconsequential references, or references that are not pertinent, suggest deleting them.
Have any ideas been overemphasized or underemphasized? Suggest specific revisions.
Should some sections of the manuscriipt be expanded, condensed or omitted?
Are the author’s statements clear? Challenge ambiguous statements. Suggest by examples how clarity can be achieved, but do not merely substitute your style for the authors.
What underlying assumptions does the author have?
Has the author been objective in his or her discussion of the topic?
Did the author use ethos, pathos, and/or logos to support the point?
Was the author’s word choice and/or tone appropriate?
