Choose a topic in the novel that interests you most. Think of all the themes we have discussed and considered (gender politics, role of women, coming of age, sexuality, class, identity and self-definition, place, racism, class, the immigrant experience, The American Dream etc.) This will be the focus of your paper that you will develop into your thesis. This is an analytical paper, which means that you must support your thesis (or main idea/argument) with evidence. Evidence should be in the form of quotes from or references to the primary text. Refer to elements of fiction that we have discussed in class such as characters, setting, narrative point of view, historical/social milieu, language, voice, etc. Analyze, don’t summarize.
