Choose a novel written by an Asian American and write an in-depth analysis (not just description) of how your chosen text answers the following question:
How does the text represent, challenge and/or change “traditional” notions of the Asian-Am experience?
Your essay should include the following:
-An INTRODUCTION to the author, book. and your main concepts. Let the reader know what this essay will be about. Remember to focus on introducing main concepts that are important.
-BODY PARAGRAPHS with concise TOPIC SENTENCES which not only describe how you feel, but explain how and why you think these reactions occurred. In your paper you will discuss various topics we have discussed in class such as gender, race, class, sexuality, language, religion, colonization, citizenship, culture, etc and how they are portrayed in the reading. To help you organize your ideas into clear body paragraphs, you might ask yourself the following questions:
What point or claim am I trying to make about the text?
What evidence (specific data, personal examples, textual evidence, narratives, etc.) can I provide that support this point?
What does the provided information mean? How does this evidence support my topic sentence? How do these examples connect back to my thesis statement?
-A CONCLUSION in which you analyze what you have learned about the text. What’s the overall significance (the “SO WHAT?”) of your analysis? What do you want your readers to remember most about your paper? Give your paper a sense of “closure,” a feeling that you’ve really finished what you began.
