Change Your Neighborhood Argument Essay
Identify an issue in a community you belong to that you want to change, identify a solution, and argue for this change. You will need to use outside research to support your reasons why this change should occur.
You will need to identify at least one counterargument and refute it. You can use up to two counterarguments. You will need to use the skills you have learned so far in this class, such as citing sources, utilizing templates, summarizing and responding, and articulating your opinion.
For this assignment, you need to write about the following (THIS IS NOT AN OUTLINE):
Propose a change in your “neighborhood” or a community you belong to. Background information will go in the introduction.
Provide brief background on the issue/problem and explain the problem.
Briefly explain how your proposed change will solve it.
Why should others agree with your proposal?
Each reason = one body paragraph.
Provide outside research from reliable sources to back up your claims.
Use MEAT structure as discussed in class.
During this time of uncertainty and stress, primary research (like interviews) is NOT allowed.
Use websites, news articles, and library database sources.
Acknowledge at least one counterargument. (Include one but no more than two counterarguments.)
A key factor in argument is acknowledging the opposing side.
Why might someone disagree with you?
What points might they raise?
What research might they provide?
Treat the opposing view fairly. Provide at least one paragraph for each view.
In a separate paragraph, refute the counterargument with reasons why your argued proposal will still work best.
Explain why you have considered the counterargument but still believe your proposal to be the best solution.
Provide evidence and research.
Requirements:
Minimum of 4 and maximum of 10 full double-spaced pages with one-inch margins.
Minimum of 4 and maximum of 8 reliable and/or academic sources cited in-text and in an annotated works cited page. (At LEAST one source must be from the library databases.)
Reasonable (Times New Roman, Arial, Garamond, etc.) 12 pt. font.
Follow MLA formatting requirements.
If you do not meet the page and citation requirements, the highest grade you can earn is a C.
Banned topics: legalizing marijuana, abortion, gun control, assisted suicide/euthanasia, and street lights.
This paper works best with a local issue you care about. For example, you could consider a change the college could make to help you during this pandemic. You will use national research to explain why your proposed solution will work locally.
Paper Outline:
This outline is to help you get started on the rough draft. You will need more reasons and content, even with the reduced page count.
I. Introduction:
Thesis: USE THE TEMPLATE (1 sentence)
II. Reason 1: What is one reason people should agree to your solution to this problem?
III. Reason 2: What is one reason people should agree to your solution to this problem?
IV: Reason 3: What is one reason people should agree to your solution to this problem?
(You will need as many reasons—likely at least four—as it takes to fill the assigned pages)
V. Opposing view/Counterargument: (What is one reason people might disagree with your solution?)
VI. Refutation: (Why is your solution still the best option even if you consider the opposing view?)
V. Conclusion
Re-word the Thesis:
Remember to use the paragraph structures for introductions, conclusions, and body paragraphs that we have already been working on in this class.
