Campaign Plan
As discussed in class, you will be writing a campaign plan. The plan should be for a future (not 2020) campaign for any elected office. The candidate for whom you are writing the plan can be a real candidate, including currently elected officials running for re-election, or you can write the plan as if you are running for that office. Your opponent may also be an actual candidate or elected official.
Your campaign plan will focus on the following areas:
Introduction – this should be your campaign’s “elevator pitch”. Who is the candidate, what office are they running for, why should voters choose them, and how will you win? Make this a narrative paragraph. Imagine you had to convince a big donor in a very quick meeting why they should fund your campaign.
Strategy – this section should go a little deeper on the Introduction section, but still not go very deep “into the weeds”. Take the sentence on how you will win from the Introduction and expand on it in more detail. If you said you will win by expanding the electorate and winning swing voters, use this section to talk, broadly about the tactics you will employ. For example, will you register more supporters? How many?
Messaging – create a message box, as we did in our first assignment, for this race. As a reminder, that is a 4 celled box, with each cell representing a message segment. What you say about your candidate, what you say about your opponent, what they say about themselves, and what they say about your candidate. Include at least 3 messages in each cell. Next, write a paragraph broadly detailing your campaign messaging strategy. How do you intend to get your message out? Which messages will you target to specific voting blocs?
Fundraising – How much money do you plan to raise, and how? What staff structure will you implement, and what fundraising tools will you utilize?
Budget – How will you spend your money? Fill out the attached budget template (feel free to make changes to it to suit your strategy, adding or deleting categories. Make sure that budget reflects your strategy – ie, if your strategy calls for persuading a certain group of voters, make sure your budget reflects that expenditure. Write a paragraph overview of your budget detailing how your budget connects to your campaign strategy.
Evaluation:
Your plan will not be graded on how well you replicate status quo campaign thinking. It will be evaluated on, first, completeness, so please follow these instructions, as well as on the merits of the rationale you provide for your decisions. So please be sure to include that information. Don’t just say what you’re going to do, but also say why.
