C‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍hoosing a Theory Choosing a theory for a practice problem is a process. Start with defining the practice problem. What is really the problem? Study the theory by doing a theory description, analysis, and evaluation. See PowerPoint on Choosing the Best Fit Theory below. Practice problem in nursing – stress and burnout in nurses Middle range theory – Resilience theory pages 270-298 of Peterson and Bredow book (pdf) or IOWA model in Rycroft-Malone book (pdf) A. Analysis (8 points) Introduction: In detail, describe the middle range theory you have chosen and discuss how it relates to a practice problem you have identified in a particular nursing environment of your choice. Give a brief background of the theorist including the paradigmatic origins of the theory. What is expected here? Introduce and describe the theory, the category of the theory in scope, the purpose of the theory in solving the practice problem (specify), the theorist and the background of the theorist, and the paradigmatic origins of the theory (philosophical underpinnings). Define important/major concepts in the theory and discuss how the concepts are related to one another. What is expected here? Identify and define the major concepts of the theory. After defining the concepts, use relational statements (McEwen, 2019, ) in your own narrative to tie and relate the concepts to each other, and give a clear connection of these concepts (ensure you have adequate resources and literature about the theory that give the definitions of the concepts, the relational, and propositional statements of the concepts; if not, you do not have enough literature to support your paper). Elaborate on how the theorist drew relationships among concepts and describe how those relationships are of interest to nursing. Address how the theory is being used in nursing literature and provide evidence from the literature to support your claim. What is expected here? Explain how the theorist structures and links the concepts in a logical order to give a cohesive whole. “Theoretical linkages offer a reasoned explanation of why the variables in the theory may be connected in some manner, which brings plausibility to the theory (McEwen, 2019, p. 81).” When you do this, you are presenting the logical order of the theory that gives the structure of the theory. Describe how these conceptual relationships are valuable to nursing and how the theory is used in nursing literature. B. Critique of the use of your theory in research. Discuss the following (8 points) a.) Generalizable The generality of a theory speaks to the scope of application and the purpose within the theory. The generality of a theory depends on how abstract and concrete a theory is (Chin & Kramer, 2015 as cited by Alligood, 2018, p. 46) How useful is your theory in the literature? Can it be applied to different settings and populations? What is expected here? Provide critique on the theory’s generalizability. Provide literature to support your claim on the generalizability of the theory in different settings and populations. b.) Clarity and Consistency Clarity speaks to the meaning of terms used (Alligood, 2018). A theory has clarity when the concepts and relationships between concepts are clearly defined. It has clarity when it avoids jargon and the definition of concepts is not ambiguous or vague. A theory has consistency when there is logical coherence from one concept to another. It is consistent when the concepts are used consistently and in congruence with their definition. What is expected here? Provide critique whether the theory has clarity and consistency. Provide literature to support your claim on the clarity and consistency of the theory. c.) Simplicity/Com‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍plexity A theory is simple when it is easily understandable without confusion. A theory is complex when the concepts are not well defined, and it is difficult to see the connections between concepts. What is expected here? Provide critique whether the theory is simple or complex. Provide literature to support your claim on the simplicity or complexity of the theory. d.) Diagram (simple, complex) – must include diagram as an appendix. A diagram is a schematic or graphic depiction of the structural and functional components of the theory. Some diagrams are very busy, for example with lots of words and arrows, which makes it hard to follow. While others are way too simple which leaves you guessing how the concepts are connected. Where does your theory diagram fall in the spectrum from simple to complex? How does the diagram contribute to understanding the theory? Explain. What is expected here? Provide critique whether the diagram is simple or complex and how the diagram has helped you understand the theory. Please cite the source from where you got your diagram. e.) Circle of contagiousness. Has your theory been used in different disciplines, across cultures, or by scholars within and outside of the .? (Provide references) What is expected here? Provide evidence from the literature on how the theory has been used in various academic disciplines, cultures, or scholars within and outside the . f.) Usefulness (Provide 1 evidence/article from the literature) Your theory is useful if it can: 1) be used to guide research, practice, education, and administration, 2) describe, explain, predict, and prescribe phenomena. What is expected here? Describe the usefulness of the theory, its contribution to guide research, practice, education, and administration, as well as its ability to describe, explain, predict, and prescribe phenomena. g.) Testable Your theory is testable if hypotheses can be developed from the theoretical assumptions and propositions and these hypotheses are tested or testable in research. Testing the theory scrutinizes the theory’s ability to explain relationships and predictions. What is expected here? Discuss the testableness of the theory. Provide evidence from the literature on how your theory has been tested in research. C. Conclusion (6 points) Discuss how your theory can be applied to solve your current practice problem. Conclude with a thoughtful review on how theory, practice, and research are linked. What is expected here? Using the prescriptions of the theory, apply the theory according to the steps prescribed to solve the practice problem writing in the first person. Link and expand on the use of theory, practice, and research (see Chapter 4). D. Organization, sentence structure, grammar, and logical flow of ideas APA format for the title page, citations, and references. The paper should be between 8-10 pages (not including title and reference pages). (3 points) What is expected here? Write a formal paper with a title page using double spacing. Organize your paper according to the headings and sequence of the rubric. Indent at the beginning of each paragraph. Build on the discussion from the basic and expand accordingly. Use Endnote, cite (if you use one author in a paragraph, use only in the beginning and the end-not citing the same author multiple times in a paragraph unless there are other authors). Follow the APA 7th Edition format. Utilize the “Guidelines in Writing APA 7th Edition” resource. Ensure that the week prior to the due date (Week 10), the paper is APA formatted and the references are entered into Endnote as this takes time. Avoid working on your APA and EndNote on the due date (December 5, 2021)! Meet the required num‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ber of pages.
