C‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ase Study – Recovering from Alcohol Use Disorder A 68 year

C‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ase Study – Recovering from Alcohol Use Disorder A 68 year old man is attending your early recovery group. He entered treatment to process a Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants citation but then continued treatment accepting his alcohol use disorder. He reports in group that he is spending a lot of his social security retirement money on his new girlfriend. He is a recent widower having lost his wife about a year ago and loneliness has been an issue in his life. You also know he has been sober for 8 months since his DUI, but, he tells the group members that his new girlfriend uses crack & alcohol regularly. He then revea‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ls that sometimes when she gets drunk she becomes so violent and abusive that she beats him up. He is embarrassed, but showed the group bruises on his upper arms and neck. Questions: • What immediate clinical concerns does this client present to the counselor or therapist? • How does this client’s recent bereavement contribute to his recent alcohol abuse and relationship issues? • Are there mandatory reporting requirements for clinicians to respond to and how would such requirements interface with confidentiality requirements? • Prioritize and list/describe the clinical interventions that need to occur with t‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍his client.
