Culture is a big challenge for a multinational manager and should be taken into consideration when negotiating with other countries. Something an American might think is standard practice may be rude to another culture. This could cause the negotiating to end abruptly or cause the other country to decide they do not want to do business with our company. It could be a simple as a certain gesture that the manager made that could cause distress or rudeness to another culture. Even in American culture, simple things could be seen as rude. For example, in the southern states, people say yes ma’am, no ma’am, and in the northern states, people do not want to be called ma’am. So, a multinational manager needs to do their research into the country’s culture they will be negotiating in. The best thing to do is find someone local and ask them about the culture, signs of disrespect, and respect to ensure that the negotiation goes well.
