Based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, for survival and growing human needs basic requirements. The primary physiological requirements vital for individuals include fluids, oxygen, nutrition, shelter, rest, toxic substances elimination from the body, body temperature, and sleep (Hopper, 2020). The discussion herein explains why oxygenation and physiological needs priorities are inherent in clients’ basic care and comfort needs.
After meeting the oxygenation needs, the following priority needs for patients is a clean and safe environment. A clean environment within the patient should ensure that it does not risk the patient infections and prevents falls by providing a well-designed room and bathroom. A calm and supportive environment for patients helps in providing a comfortable sleep and enhances their satisfaction, which further enhances their outcome.
Health status is an individual’s wellness and illness levels that tell about biological, physiological, dysfunction, and functional impairment. According to Ackley et al. (2019), a change in health status affects the patient’s psychological functioning. For instance, it can lead to changes in pressure, the body’s chemical condition, and body temperature. This change affects the basic needs, such as nutrition, sleep, and rest quantity in the body, resulting in a severe problem.
To maintain the physiological change in the patients, first, nurses are responsible for observing the changes in the patient body then choosing the best intervention that will benefit them. For instance, if a patient is suffering from an infection, nurses should first observe the signs and symptoms and measure vital signs. After this, the nurse is expected to provide the right medication that assists in reducing the infections, provide them with an adequate diet that enhances the energy level of the patient, and last educate the patient on how to maintain hygiene and physiological changes by taking adequate amount of liquid and proper diet (Ackley et al., 2019). Conclusively, nurses have a central role in providing priorities inherent in patients’ basic care and comfort needs.
