Background : Almost every TV show or movie involves a form of conflict, and we can learn a great deal about effective, or ineffective, communication from the movies we watch. For this assignment, you will be writing an essay from the questions below regarding a chosen movie, and analyzing the relationship development, maintenance, and conflict management used by the characters involved.  You may need to watch/rewind/replay scenes several times in order to successfully complete this assignment. Since this is a college level course, proper English is required (paragraphs, complete sentences, proper grammar and correct spelling) so proofread to ensure that your paper reflects a professional appearance. You will need to include proper citation material from the textbook to support your claims. You will need to underline terms/concepts (see details below).
Assignment Description : Read the instructions below, and then pick a movie that involves a scene of conflict that will enable you to answer the questions. It has to be a movie that focuses on a relationship (family, friendship, romantic, etc.) Romantic comedies are often a good option for movie analysis, but the opportunities are endless.  Throughout your essay, you will need to cite information from chapters 8 and 9 in your textbook to support the claims of your analysis. Please NUMBER the 6 different sections in your paper so I can read it more easily. (This does not mean you are limited to 6 paragraphs — just 6 sections).
Here are the details:
1.    In your first paragraph, give a BRIEF description/summary of the plot of your chosen movie, and identify the characters in the relationship involved that you are choosing to analyze.
2.    Read chapter 8, and identify the type of relationship of the two characters of focus. What stage of relationship is best demonstrated by the two characters in this movie? (If you are having trouble picking a stage, identify the stage that is most demonstrated at the time of the scene of conflict that you will analyze). Cite information from chapter 8 to support your reasons for identifying this stage.
3.    Choose a scene of conflict, and give a brief description of the conflict and the characters involved. What relationship dynamics existed at the time of conflict? (From chapter 8, pages 195-203). For instance, were the individuals involved struggling to manage dialectical tensions? Was there uncertainty involved?  What about costs and rewards? What other conflict triggers and factors were involved that led to/surrounded the conflict? (From chapter 9, pages 217-224). For instance, was there a defensive communication climate that led to poor conflict management? Were there cultural differences involved that influenced the conflict?  Elaborate on any of these relationship dynamics, triggers, and conflict factors.  Cite information from the chapters to support your claims.
Here are the most important parts, and they should involve the most writing:
Identify and analyze the conflict management strategies executed by the characters involved. Cite information from the book to support your opinions regarding the strategies used by each character. Underline terms/concepts. What were the benefits and/or drawbacks of the strategies used?
Was there reconciliation? Do you believe the conflict was solved effectively?  How could the characters have improved their communication to make the conflict more productive? Explain with appropriate support and citation material from your text. Underline terms.
Finally, explain what YOU can learn from this as far as effective/ineffective conflict management by identifying YOUR OWN action plan for improving communication through conflict in your life. Based on your analysis of the characters of your chosen movie, explain what you learned and how can YOU improve your approach to managing conflict.  Be sure to use one or more of the terms/concepts from the section on strategies for managing conflict. Even if you are already a seasoned vet with managing relational conflict, there is always room for improvement, so I need to see your action plan. What are some changes/improvements you plan to make? Underline terms/concepts and cite information appropriately.
Your essay should be AT LEAST 3 pages double spaced (12 point font, Times New Roman). As you cite material from your text, you’ll need to UNDERLINE the terms and concepts you are citing to support your claims (APA or MLA citations are fine, whatever you are most comfortable with – I just need to see that you were connecting concepts from the reading to your essay).  I should see a total of at least 7-8 terms/concepts from the following sections of the book:
Chapter 8: Types of Interpersonal Relationships
Chapter 8: Managing Relationship Dynamics
Chapter 8: Self-Disclosure and Interpersonal Relationships
Chapter 8: Stages of relationships
Chapter 9: Conflict Triggers
Chapter 9: Factors Affecting Conflict
Chapter 9: Strategies for Managing Conflict
Chapter 9: Reconciliation
