Assignment: Write a two- to three-page research paper on a problem associated with any of the topics in the research paper folder or choose your own topic as long as it has my preapproval.
TOPIC HAS BEEN CHOSEN IN TITLE!!!
Interracial couples being discriminated by strangers in public.
A research paper is an essay that searches for the opinions of experts on the topic and places those opinions in conversation with the opinion of the author of the paper. For this paper, I’d like your research to be limited to describing some problem by breaking the problem into four parts: (1)What is the problem? (2) How do we know it’s a problem? (3) Who/what is affected by this problem? (4) How extensively are the who/what affected by this problem?
Topic selection is important. I urge you to avoid the obvious, though, and not write about the negative health consequences of obesity or texting while driving, for example. A much more interesting paper would be about the contrary: why texting and driving isn’t as dangerous as people say or watching violent images and reading violent stories could actually help children to become peaceful and emotionally stable adults.
Objectives:
1. Create an interesting title.
2. Create an interesting opening that uses either statistics or the they say/I say counterclaim approach.
3. Produce a thesis that clearly defines the problem.
4. Create well-developed and focused body paragraphs that use research to support the assertions made about the four parts of the problem.
5. Quote from at least three sources, two of which must be peer-reviewed in order to meet the research requirement.
6. At some point, include a counterclaim in your paper. What would those who disagree say? Why would they disagree? Are they wrong or is it merely that their counterarguments aren’t sufficiently strong to overwhelm your arguments?
7. Show evidence of revision for paragraph structure by using topic sentences, paragraph conclusions, and transitions to generate clarity, focus, and cohesion.
8. Demonstrate the ability to quote and correctly cite quotes using MLA format.
9. Provide a meaningful conclusion that summarizes the main points, discusses their broader significance, and revisits the ideas in the opening in order to create symmetry and inculcate main ideas. The conclusion should address the following: Why do the ideas matter? Why should the reader be interested in the ideas you discuss? What’s at stake if we don’t agree with you?
10. Create a works cited page that complies with MLA standards and shows that you selected sources because of their relevance, credibility, and competence.
11. Revise for grammar and MLA style.
How do you get the reader’s attention and build credibility? There are many ways, but for this paper, I’d like you to achieve those goals by beginning your paper with a startling statistic. Open your paper with research that conveys the severity of the problem you will discuss. For example, if your paper is about the problem of expensive college, you might begin with research that shows how much it costs to attend four years of college.
By beginning with startling research, you not only seize the reader’s attention, but also earn credibility by showing you’ve done your research–you know your topic and have read about it.
