2: Research-based assignment on the impact of ride-sharing on the economy and
society
Your task: Write a brief
for senior decision-makers
Your
task is to write a brief for senior decision-makers in a government agency,
analysing the rise of ride-sharing platforms such as Uber, Didi, Ola and the
like, and their impact on the greater economy in recent years.
Specifically,
you will need to introduce the economic theories and/or concepts of the
traditional taxi industry, and compare and contrast (discuss similarities and
differences) them with the economic theories and/or concepts that underlie the
ride-sharing industry. To do this, you should narrow your discussion to a
specific jurisdiction, be it a city (e.g. Sydney, Chicago, London) or a country
(e.g. USA, France). This will be followed by a dynamic analysis of how this
shift has affected the relevant firms/owners, consumers and government
policymaking and regulation pertaining to the shift away from protecting the
taxi industry to living with the disruption to it arising from the phenomenal
growth of the ride-sharing industry.

Introduce your case study analysis
Discuss the nature of each
industry using economic theories and/or concepts (e.g. competitive,
monopolistic etc). Information from Module 3 on firm behaviour can be used
as a starting point, though you are free to look elsewhere as long as you
can justify your position.
Discuss the change in consumer
behaviour using relevant theories and/or concepts with respect to their
move away from the taxi industry to the ridesharing industry. Information
from Module 3 on consumer behaviour can be used as a starting point,
though you are free to look elsewhere as long as you can justify your
position. These theories and/or concepts need not be economic in nature if
you believe other fields of study are more relevant. The psychology
discipline, for example, may be useful if you wish to take a broader look.
Note there is no need to move beyond the economics discipline theories
and/or concepts; this is just an option for those who may wish to do so.
Discuss the impact on the demand
for ride services and supply of ride services as the economy shifts away
from the traditional taxi industry to the ride-sharing industry. Module 2
will assist.
With a look at the potential (if
any) trade-offs between efficiency and fairness (see Module 4,
particularly 4.7), develop a position on the benefits and costs of
providing government support to the owners of taxi licences as the value
of their investment falls with the rise of the ride-sharing industry. This
can be linked, if you wish, to sustainable economic principles (one
example, but there are others, would be whether ride-sharing is better
than the taxi industry for the environment?).
