As we have discussed in class, the setting for a given story may be much more than a simple
backdrop; it can function to foreshadow a sinister plot, reveal certain uncomfortable truths about
a story’s central characters, and manifest peculiar elements we otherwise might not have noticed.
In this essay, refer to two to three of the stories we have discussed thus far and, in detail, referring
to textual evidence for support of your claims, explain how the setting helps us to form a better
understanding of the text as a whole. For example, what does it reveal about the characters
psychologically and/or physically? How does it help make the author’s intended
meaning/statement or message more clear and understandable? Your paper must be a minimum
of four (4) pages in length and a maximum of six (6) pages, typed, double spaced and adhere to
MLA guidelines. I will be grading this essay on how well you establish and argue your thesis and
integrate textual support for your claims.
