Midterm Guidelines & Questions
(20%) of your final grade, Due October 21st, by midnight
Please read the guidelines carefully before writing your essay.
•    Your essay should be at least 5  pages and no more than 7 , 1.5 spacing, 12 font Times Roman. 1 inch margins.
•    Please save your essay as a word doc (NOT a PDF). Its title should be your last name/midterm. Do not e-mail it to me.
•    Please read the questions carefully and think about how to answer them. Make sure to have an outline before you start writing.
•    You are expected to demonstrate your mastery of the readings and attentiveness to class discussions. Make sure to draw on ALL relevant texts.
•    Be analytical, rather than descriptive. No longish quotes (no block quotations!) You may illustrate a point with a maximum of two or three sentences from the readings, but NO MORE. Don’t summarize any tales or plots!
•    There is no need to use full titles when referencing, author’s last name, followed by a comma and page number is sufficient: (e.g. Dobie, 95, or Sallis, 141). Use “Nights” rather than “The Arabian Nights”. Write only your last name on the first page and the number of questions you are answering. No need for any other information (Gallatin, NYU, NYC, Planet Earth. . . etc) or unnecessary space between paragraphs.
•  Edit and spell-check your essay before you submit it.
Answer the TWO following in essay form
I.    The frame story plays an integral, generative, and complex role in the overall narrative of the Nights. Elaborate on this statement and discuss the various approaches to reading the frame tale. Illustrating with concrete examples in which other tales are in conversation with the frame tale (but No summaries!).
II. Both Hamori and Gaul read “The Story of the Porter and the Three Ladies.” Compare and contrast their approach, assumptions, and conclusions.
