Apply the skills of rhetorical analysis to a visual text. In this case, you’ll state whether you think it’s reasonable to assume that the ad was effective, based on its rhetorical components and appeals.
To do this, you will need to find a one-page print ad (Attached Below) and follow the steps. In brief, the steps to analyzing visual rhetoric are as follows:
Notice where the ad appears.
Identify and reflect on what draws your attention.
Consider the ethos of the ad.
Analyze the pathos in the ad.
Understand the logos of the ad.
Then, write a well-organized and insightful essay explaining the ad in terms of rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, logos) and components (situation, purpose, main claim/message, audience).
To add depth to your analysis, be sure to do some basic outside research about the ad’s context, company, product, etc. (e.g., Are there recent controversies about the company that might influence how they are advertising themselves?) You should cite that research, and you shouldn’t let it take over your essay. (The analysis should still be the primary focus of the essay; the research is for context.)
Essay should contain the following elements:
Introduction
Name of author(s) and visual text being analyzed and where it appeared.
Thesis stating whether it is reasonable to assume that the text’s main argument was effective and why.
Preview of supporting claims in the order they’ll be discussed.
Body: Should clearly and accurately identify key rhetorical aspects of text
Paragraphs structured around claims (topic sentences, not quotes), with appropriate evidence supporting those claims.
Textual evidence (including descriptions of visual elements) appropriately attributed, integrated, and explained (“quote sandwich”).
Keywords from original text used precisely.
Rhetorical analysis keywords used accurately and precisely.
Logical relationships between sentences, ideas, and paragraphs made explicit with appropriate connecting language and transitions.
Conclusion
Restates gist of argument and reflects content of body.
Style and Conventions
Objective, analytic tone expressed throughout explanation of text; evaluation based on analysis of text, not personal response to text.
Sentences follow standard rules of English grammar and spelling.
Cover page, manuscript, and references formatted according to APA guidelines.
