1. Roger Gottlieb claims that while the civil rights movement can attribute some of its success to its religious character, it must also acknowledge that its religious character contributed to the movement’s limitations. Imagine yourself as someone who was involved in the civil rights movement of the 1960’s, observing the leadership style of Ella Baker and Martin Luther King, Jr. From that perspective, describe what you consider to be one success and one limitation of the movement, especially in terms of the role of black women.
2. Ella Baker believed that God requires of each person “to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Describe how Baker understood love and justice from an explicity Christian perspective, particularly in terms of her non-violent strategy, as a moral necessity for civil rights.
3. Michelle Alexander makes the case that we are now living in a new Jim Crow era. Describe what she means by that; how would Ella Baker respond to the explosion of incarceration rates since the passing of the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act of 1964 and 1965, respectively?
