Objective: Students will examine, analyze, and present on prevalent topics in education to determine the impact onstudents’ academic-social-emotional functioning.
The students will be asked to complete an 8 -10 page paper using APA format. On their chosen topic of educationalinterest, the students will be asked to consider the followingrubric:
i. History (What is the background of thistopic as it relates to educational practices?What are the controversies? Why are therecontroversies?)
ii. Current Practices (What is being done and how is it being done? What are the differencesand similarities? What funding supports thepractices? What educational mandates supportthe practices? )
iii. Impact Data (what works and how effectiveare the practices? How does the practice impactother areas of educational practices? Are studentsachieving academically? Are students developingsocially and emotionally? Describe how.)
iv. Ecological School Social Work Practice(How does the particular area of interest impactschool social work practices and how does thetopic fit with an ecological model of schoolsocial work/)
v. Impressions (Which approach do you supportfrom your thorough review of the literature and why? How does it fit with social work values?Howe does the approach align with effectiveinterventions for targeted groups of students?How would you develop on going assessment ofeffectiveness? How would you
match social work activities with the needs of the targetedgroups of students in your topic? Who are the stakeholdersand how would you involve them?)
vi. Conclusion ( What are the positive things that you havelearned from this topical review and what areas are youconcerned about with respect to this topic? What areas ofthis topic continue to need to be explored? How will schoolsocial work practice be enhanced or diminished by thecurrent status on this topic?)
Students are requested to use a variety of resources includingeducational documents; social work and psychologicaldocuments; review educational policies; review databasesfrom the U. S. Department of Education, and make sure that they are familiar with evidence based practices associated with the topical area.
Each student will be required to complete a multimediatopical presentation to the class. The presentation should integrate readings from the texts of Allen-Meares, Freeman,and Constable as these readings relate to the topics.
