Advocacy Project An important component of public health is not just understanding the social determinants of health, but advocating for communities that suffer from these social determinants, and advocating for policy change that could improve lives. As a final project in this course, I expect you to advocate for an issue related to one of the many topics covered in the course (class, race,sex, migration and health; access to health care, social relationships, environmental and occupational health, etc.). First, find a local, state, or federal policy or proposed policy that shapes a social determinant of health. This could be a new city public housing policy, a statewide bill proposed to provide Medicare for all, or federal border policies, for example. There are issues all over the spectrum. Investigate this issue and the position of the policy-makers who represent you. Then, write a letter to that policy-maker that explains your position as an emerging public health advocate, and why you think this policy will help or hurt the health of their constituents’ lives. This letter needs to have the correct policy-maker/representative’s name and address, as we will be mailing these letters. You may do something different than a letter,such as a health education tool for a community (a children’s book or a health education lesson),a white paper, a how-to elevator speech guide for advocates of this topic, a program plan to institute change, or an informative health education video). What is important is that you investigate your topic and complete a tool that will be accessible to diverse audiences. See these guidelines: https://ctb.ku.edu/en/advocating-change
Be sure to upload your actual tool or a word document explaining your tool. If it is something more creative not on a computer, upload the explanation anyway. All students: be sure to include at least one paragraph explanation of why you did this, citing references to resources that guided your concern for the topic.
