A3 Description:
Throughout the semester you have explored a variety of assessment and intervention strategies that are applied to address the needs of offender rehabilitation. In other words, how can you assist released offenders to re-invent themselves. You will be provided with a number of case studies (see below), where you should assume the individuals are to be released (regardless of whether they are deceased or what their official sentence was). You will need to explore the issues that have caused the offender to be incarcerated and provide an appropriate community corrections strategy that reflects the release and reintegration plan you have provided. You must assume this report is a legal document that could be obtained through freedom of information. You should also avoid any analysis that is not part of the case study. The report should not focus on unproven speculation, rather it should be based on details in the case study and the legal analysis that took place. If this was a real situation it would not assist the prisoner to challenge the verdict (whether or not, it was reasonable) or any appeal decision.
For this assignment you will choose ONE of the case studies which detail the background of an offender, the context of their offending and the sentence that has been delivered by the court. You should assume (for the purpose of this exercise), the individual is eligible for release and the release is likely to be granted.
To complete this assessment, you will need to address the following:
First, you will discuss the complexities surrounding offender assessment with particular focus on evidence- based practice and its relationship to the case study.
Next, you will discuss a strategy for effective intervention which reflects the needs of the offender, the community and the victim where relevant.
Finally, from there you will discuss how this strategy will be implemented and what considerations need to be made regarding the structural institutional factors that have impacted on the offender.
As in the field, not all of this information will be available to you in the case study; you may find it useful to ’fill in the blanks’ based on the strategy you choose to implement. However, be cautious of making speculative, unsubstantiated claims and assumptions about the offender, the victim or the community. Government websites such as the Australian Institute of Criminology and the NSW Department of Justice are also acceptable
