A literary research paper takes an issue, question, or problem in a text and offers an interpretation of it that gives the reader greater insight into the text. You may ask a research question about the use of an image or symbol in a text or texts, or how the text explores a specific theme, or how the text portrays an idea like “the self,” or any number of other questions. Your goal is to make an argument about a contestable aspect of a text or texts that will elucidate them for the reader.
The best literary research papers are much more than summaries of the text or of scholarship on the text. Instead, your paper should (1) make a clear argument about a specific aspect of the text and (2) utilize relevant primary and secondary sources as evidence to support your argument.
Required Length and Style:
