Population: Disabled – specifically primary and high
school students with disabilities and special needs.
Research Question: Can school special needs educational
programs such as Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA Therapy) around behavioural
and learning development be effective in improving academic performance and classroom
engagement for student with cognitive disabilities such as autism?
Psychological Developmental Theory: B. F. Skinner Behavioural
Learning Theory
Possibly one of the most famous figures in the history of
psychology let alone Developmental Psychology is BF Skinner. His research with
animals enabled a greater understanding of another important form of learning
known as operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is a form of learning where
behaviours become more or less probable depending on the consequences they
produce. So, this theory works on the logic whereby an initial action or
behaviour is associated with the positive or negative consequences that follow
it. People tend to repeat behaviours that have desirable consequences and cut
down on behaviours that have undesirable consequences. It is through operant
conditioning that we learn new skills and a range of habits, both good and bad.
