A 72 year old male makes his way down a ramp to a line in a common room that has formed in front of the nurse who is dispensing medications to other elderly men that are waiting. Some of the men are in wheelchairs, some use walkers and some are still able to stand on their own. At one end of the room, a man with Alzheimer’s is being calmed after having an anxiety attack. While you may think that this could be a scene from a nursing home, it could also be an appropriate depiction of one of our nation’s prisons. What changes would you want to make to a correctional facility to make it safer for the aging population?
