• You may write on any topic directly connected to at least ONE of the substantive RACE & ETHNICITY-related
themes covered on the syllabus (i.e., any topic directly related to topic # “i” or “iii” through “x”). For the topic you
select, please be sure to…
1. Discuss how your topic relates to specific race & ethnicity-focused theme/s on the syllabus.
• Feel free to integrate key concepts covered relevant section(s) during this discussion.
2. Apply at least one race & ethnicity-related THEORY to your discussion—i.e., briefly describe the
theory, and discuss its relevance to your chosen topic. [You may choose from the many theories
addressed in lectures, mandatory readings, or “eRes” articles]
3. Incorporate material from at least THREE unique SCHOLARLY publications.
 “Scholarly” publications are intended primarily for academic professionals (e.g., university
professors) and are typically also authored by academic professionals. Such publications typically
undergo some form of “peer review” (involving assessment by “experts” in the specific area) before
being accepted for publication.
 A scholarly publication is “unique” if it does NOT appear anywhere on the syllabus—i.e., is neither a
mandatory reading nor an optional “eRres” item.
 NOTE: Publications reporting findings of original empirical research performed by the author/s
are preferable (e.g., studies reporting findings of survey-, experimental or field research-based
analyses…Please AVOID publications that are solely literature reviews or opinion/theory-type
articles).
4. Discuss in detail the “story” that these 3-or more “unique” scholarly publications collectively
communicate about your race & ethnicity-related topic.
 NOTE that it is NOT a problem if specific contradict each other…Simply acknowledge the
contradiction, and briefly offer your thoughts about why the inconsistency exists.
5. Briefly discuss the adequacy/suitability of the research method(s) utilized in your unique sources.
[For example, you may comment on the appropriateness of the actual method used for assessing the
main research question, and/or the adequacy of the sample that is analyzed].
 NOTE: If a given source doesn’t analyze actual data, please discuss briefly what kind of research method
or data would have enhanced it.
 NOTE: This should NOT be an editorial-/opinion-type paper that emphasizes your views on what
should or shouldn’t be…Additionally you are FREE to utilize eRes articles or textbook chapters;
but they will evidently NOT “count” toward the “3 unique scholarly items” requirement…It’s
the contents of the “unique” articles that should be emphasized in the write-up.
Effective strategies for locating “unique Scholarly” sources
(i.e., journal articles, book chapters, or entire books)
i. Scan the “reference” section of related publications listed on the syllabus (i.e., either the textbook or eRes items)
ii. Search the Socindex, Sociological Abstracts, JStor, or Psychinfo electronic databases that are accessible from
the “research databases” section of library’s web page.
