1. In Section I you should explain: “What I understood from
the readings?” Even if you found the reading confusing or difficult, there
should be some element that you understood. This section should focus on the
text itself and the author’s arguments. This is not about your personal
reaction to the text or your opinion, but about your understanding of what the
author is arguing.
2. In Section II you should explain: “What I did not
understand from the readings?” Even if you comprehended most of the readings,
there will always be parts of the text that are confusing, or unclear. This
section should also focus on the text itself and the author’s arguments and not
on your personal opinions. You need to cite the passage that you did not
understand and explain your confusion.
3. In Section III you should pose 1 or 2 critical questions
to help orient class discussion. Questions should not take the form of “yes or
no” questions, but elicit a conversation, be open-ended. The questions,
however, should also be grounded on the text.
