1) Create a meme. The topic of the meme should address an information literacy issue (fake news, trusting sources, developing knowledge, and so forth). I recommend that you begin by reviewing the slides and readings from earlier in the semester. I also encourage you to review some of the meme examples discussed in class.
2) To create your meme, find an image. Add text either on the image or below the image. To add text directly to an image, find a meme generator online (type “meme” and “generator” into Google). There are many that allow you to generate memes for free. For example:
3) To submit your meme, please take a screenshot of the image or copy the image. Paste the image and text into a Word document. If the text is not on the image, please paste the image and include the text below the image.
4) Please write 1,250-1,500 words (not including references) as you answer the following questions:
a) What is a meme? (Minimum 50 words)
b) How might a meme contribute to public discourse? (Minimum 250 words)
c) How does your meme adapt a theme?
d) Discuss the insight that your meme attempts to highlight. What makes it effective?
5) Please answer the questions above by referring mainly to academic journal articles or books. Answers to questions a) and b) should be developed by reviewing the academic literature. In c) and d) try to be specific about the elements of your meme and relate those elements to your previous answers.
6) Please provide in-text citations and a reference list in APA style.
Recommendations:
• It is recommended that you use Google Scholar to find your sources. A search for “meme” and “public discourse” or “meme” and “humor” will produce many useful results.
• I recommend that you review materials published by Ryan M. Milner and/or Limor Shifman; however, you are welcome to find your own academic sources. Milner’s unpublished dissertation is considered an academic source for this assignment.
7) Papers are to be uploaded to the appropriate location on eClass via Turnitin. If you have any privacy concerns about Turnitin, please speak to the instructor.
