Distinguish, discuss, and estimate the unique effectiveness of different media formats. ? Critically analyze the student’s own perceptions of the content and delivery of media messages. 2. Assignment Overview: Your assignment is to write about a global event (such as Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines) and discuss the role of the media within that country during that event. Many Americans don’t realize the diversity of media environments around the world. Additionally, the concept of freedom of the press is not universally accepted. In many regions the media is controlled by the government ‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍and dissenting information is blocked or punished. The media environment of a country (whether free or not) often dictates how global events are reported. See #3 (below) for specific requirements. 3. Assignment Goals and Content Requirements: Examine media environment in a foreign country Explain the nature of the foreign media, how it runs, who is in control, how “free” it is, etc. Also check out the following CCBC Library databases: Humanities International and Global Road Warrior (select country then look at Human Rights Report). Increase appreciation of sacrifices made by people reporting the news Provide at least one specific example of a challenge faced by a reporter in this country. See Reporters Without Borders website at Assess effectiveness of information delivery systems Discuss how the global event was reported and what the role of the media was. Include the date, time and specific location of the event. Also, identify what types of media were used (ex. newspaper, twitter). You should finish by evaluating the effectiveness of the media’s roles in the event. Research Requirements: Minimum of 3 sources. At least one from a CCBC Library database. Sources should come from an assortment of resources with emphasis on Academic Research and should reflect a diverse group of publications and points of view. Keep in mind that ‘some’ resources are not considered valid for a college level paper. (Examples: Wikipedia, , eHow, or other web content aggregators) Include a Works Cited Page in MLA style. Format Requirements: The paper should be typed, 750-1000 words (3-4 pages double space) and in MLA format. Begin with an Introduction and end with a Conclusion/Summary (one paragraph each). Submit an electronic copy of your paper using the “Assignments” link in Blackboard‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍.
