Architecture

Since one of the key objectives of the course is to become able to recognize and utilize various lineages and connections between 

architectural works of varying location and time period, each student will maintain and submit two incremental installments of a ‘visual diary’. 

 

Lineage affiliation in architecture can take many forms, but we will focus on these: 

  -Program / Use 

  -Formal composition  

  -Thematic 

  -Material and structure  

 

Key themes to be explored will include:  

-Tradition and Continuity: the relationship between modern architectural masterworks and historically significant settings 

-Craft: how regional traditions of building influence and support innovations in contemporary architecture 

-The Role of the Architect in Society: paradigms for practice, cultural production, social advocacy, and theoretical discourse 

-Architecture and Place: relationships between buildings and cities, landscapes, and prevalent cultural norms and patterns of use
