you will explore the 3 primary ways to analyze film: PLOT, FORM, and CULTURE.
PLOT: The classic Hollywood plot opens with an equilibrium, then there is disruption of that equilibrium, and at the end of the film there is a new equilibrium. Many of the earliest films did not have a plot. Identify the equilibrium/disruption/new equilibrium in the Lumiere Brothers’ “L’Arroseur Arrosé” (“The Sprinkler Sprinkled” — i.e. the film about the garden hose from 3:04 – 3:40) and in Porter’s “The Life of an American Fireman.” (Both films can be found on youtube)
FORM: This week you will emphasize the SHOT. Watch these week’s videos on shot composition, types of shots, and camera angles. Then analyze the Shot Composition, Types of Shots, and Camera Angles in 2 key sequences in Porter’s “The Life of an American Fireman”: 1) the alarm sequence (00:00 – 01:05); 2) the rescue sequence (03:14-06:01)
CULTURE: Discuss how “The Life of an American Fireman” reflected and perhaps shaped cultural beliefs in the United States in the early 20th Century: how does the film portray firefighters? how does the film portray women?
