How to approach the essay: The essay needs to cohesive. You may not simply answer each question of the prompt one by one. You will lose points if you do this. 1. Answer each question of the prompt in your notes, then read through them to see how you can use the evidence you’ve gathered to support a specific thesis. 2. Then review where you can add more evidence/examples. 3. Next, write your cohesive rough draft with citations. 4. Add in the required elements of formatting (page numbers, check your spacing, etc.). 5. Check your draft against both the technical and content requirements and rubrics. 6. Revise the content of your essay for quality. 7. Edit your essay for technical errors, typos, grammar, etc. 8. Save your essay as a Word docx. This is the only file format accepted. 9. Submit your Assignment on Blackboard in the folder as directed. Writing Assistance As this is an upper-division course, it is expected all students will have completed the general English/writing requirements for all NAU degrees. For additional assistance, I recommend the following resources: NAU University Writing Commons Cline Library Services for Online Students UNC Writing Center Tips & Tools Thesis Statements Plagiarism Transitions Evidence Passive Voice Citing Sources Unsure of how to cite a particular source? Check the appropriate style guide. While professors are usually happy to answer questions, citation questions can usually be answered by you checking the style guide so start there before you reach out to faculty and teaching assistants. Below are useful links for citation formatting: Cline Library “How Do I Cite?” Purdue OWL for MLA, APA and CMS Chicago Manual of Style Online (through a subscription owned by Cline Library) Print copies of the 3 style guides are also available in Cline Library. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers Chicago Manual of Style Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association: The Official Guide to APA Style Assignment Assignment 1 The shorter essay assignments in this course provide students the opportunity to write a cohesive essay in response to the topics of the last few weeks with me (the professor) rather than their classmates as the intended audience. The essay is similar to take a home exam essay, as I am looking for evidence of your understanding of the course materials for weeks 1 through 6 but the essay should be carefully composed as a writing assignment with a thesis and citations and edited for style, grammar, and composition. The best responses use terms from the course materials, contain thoughtful analysis, and provide specific examples from the course materials and are revised for content, organization, and style. You may not use any sources other than those in the sways (you can use anything in the sways, including articles, videos, etc.-anything in the sways, including recommended material), assigned films, and textbook for Weeks 1 through 6. If you do, you will receive a 0 for the essay. You must also cite the course materials you use in your essay. Do not answer each question by question. Instead, write a cohesive essay. Essay Prompt: Apply the moral reasoning we learned about in relation to fossil fuels to nuclear power (including the mining of the uranium necessary for nuclear power) by addressing the problems posed by nuclear power and interpret the consequences of nuclear through application of the Harm Avoidance Principle. What are some of the ethical questions we can apply both for and against nuclear power usage? What are some of the problems associated with nuclear power? Discuss the artistic responses to the environmental impact of uranium or nuclear power by discussing either the Hope and Trauma in a Poisoned Landscape or the Radioactive Wind exhibits discussed in the sways earlier in the semester. How can artistic responses to the effects of uranium mining and/or nuclear plant meltdowns impact our ethical considerations of the risks and rewards of uranium mining and nuclear power generation? Technical Requirements: Your submission must be a doc or docx file attached in your submission. As per the syllabus, other file formats are not acceptable. If you submit in an unaccepted file type, your submission will be subject to the course late policy until you resubmit using doc/docx. Do not copy and paste your submission into the submission box (see above). Name your file with your last name and Assignment 1. For example, SmithAssignment1. Your essay should be in Times New Roman, Arial, or Calibri fonts, at 12 point, and use black for the font color for ease of reading. 10 points will be deducted from your overall score if you use other fonts, font sizes, or font colors. This is for ease of reading. You must write an essay that is at least 500 words in length. The most successful essays are frequently longer than 500 words and are usually closer to 1500 words. Late submissions are subject to the course late penalty regardless of the reason for the late submission. General Requirements 1. You must cite any and all sources. MLA, Chicago Manual of Style, and APA are all acceptable for citations and you may use either in-text or footnote citations (whichever you are most comfortable with). Do not use endnotes. You may cite my lectures as Pratt-Sturges, Rebekah. “Title of Lecture.” For example: Pratt-Sturges, Rebekah. “Radioactive Landscapes.” You can add the date you watched the video. 2. The best essays have a thesis formed from your answer to the prompt questions, provide specific examples from the course materials to support your statements and provide evidence from all of the related course materials (meaning that your essay shows you reviewed the assigned items). The inclusion of these aspects will likely result in an essay closer to 1500 words than 500. 3. It is expected that students will edit writing assignments for grammar and composition (in contrast to the forum posts, which are more conversational). Essays with numerous grammar and composition errors will receive in a lower score. Essays should be revised for cohesion and organization. 4. I may provide some feedback after grading but students are encouraged to review the rubric. Specific, comprehensive feedback is always available over Zoom. 5. The prompt is purposefully open ended to allow you more flexibility in how you want to approach the prompt. Ultimately, I am looking for evidence of your knowledge and understanding of the course materials combined with thoughtful contemplation of the issues related to the topic. Assignment Rubric The following chart represents the rubric employed for grading of assignments. All criteria must be met to achieve each letter grade below.
