Research Paper– Research A Contemporary Artist
For the purposes of this assignment choose an artwork at an approved venue that was made IDEALLY AFTER 1970. Please select something that you connect with visually. Consider the work in the context both of this class’ topics that we have discussed thus far, and any historic impact and/or contemporary relevance that you discover through research. Finally, express your own response to the work and its impact or relevance to you. You must also create a sketch of the artwork in your sketchbook.
Your submission will include:

A title page with your name/studio, a picture of the artwork you viewed with artist name, title, date, and medium on the In-depthdiscussion/analysisoftheartworkthatyouselectedfromthemuseum(usingthe outline below as a guide to your discussion)
Discussion of the artist’s work as a whole, their artistic intent and the general ideas behind the artist’s entire body of work. (research online) Oftentimes artists do many types of works, so choose the images carefully so that they fit within the context of the artist’s historic influences and contemporary relevance.
3 other images of the artist’s work & 1 scan of your drawing of the artwork you viewed at the approved venue.
Include a Bibliography/works cited — Be sure to cite your sources for both images and quotes using footnotes. There is no specified writing format/style. (The footnotes are not included in the 3-4 pages typed for content)
Include an admission ticket stub, or a photograph of you in the museum as proof– scan and include on the sources pages.

Step 1. (Take notes while at the museum – it will be useful when writing your paper at home)
 Select an artwork from IDEALLY AFTER 1970
✓ Note the artist’s name,
✓ the artwork’s title,
✓ year of completion,
✓ materials, etc. and
✓ make a drawing of the artwork.
 By considering and taking notes of the following questions while you are at the museum, you will be able to quickly and easily write your paper once you have left the museum.
a. What is it and how was it made? Consider the materials and the techniques.
b. How is the work of art composed? Describe how the elements of art are arranged into the
design: line, shape, color, texture, space, light v dark.(see lecture 3)
c. How are the principles of design utilized within the composition? (see lecture 3)
d. Describe how the artwork stimulates you visually . Does the work provokean emotional response…it should!
e. What does the work mean?… try to understand what the artist had in mind, and why did you like or dislike the work of art?
Step 2 : ( To be completed after museum visit )
 Research the artist books, articles, websites, etc. and then expand your research to learn more about the artist. Find 3 more examples of their artwork.
 Discuss (in your own words) the artwork you viewed and wrote about in the museum in the context of the larger body of the artist’s work, historic influences and contemporary relevance. Consider:
Historic influences: What artists, art movements, time periods, cultures, events and traditions is the artist influenced by?
Artistic intent: What are the main questions and ideas that the artist explores in their work? Contemporary relevance: What connections can you find between this artist’s work and your experience of contemporary life? Does it connect to recent events, cultural movements, fashion, music, family, etc.? Is the work autobiographical, political., etc.?
Personal response: What do you find most interesting or inspiring about the artist’s work?
