Write a couple paragraphs about one of these topics that you encounter:

BIO 203 Class Presentations
Create a 10 minute powerpoint presentation (that you will present in class) about a specific disease (you
may choose any from Chapters 19, 20, 24, or 25 of our textbook; the only exception being you may not
choose measles, polio, monkeypox, or pertussis). You should discuss the type of microbe that causes the
disease in detail. Describe the type of test used to diagnose the disease. Tell us about the microbe and
its characteristic. Tell us the symptoms of the disease. Tell us how the immune system may react to the
disease. Describe the treatments/cures if there are any. You may also include current research into
cures or alleviation of symptoms and the history of the disease.
The presentation should be at least 15 slides long.
Please let me know your topic by November 3rd (each disease can only be done by one person)
You will need to turn in your powerpoint presentation to me via email the by the day before your
presentation.
We will give presentations during class (and part of lab time), the weeks of November 27th and
December 4th. As the date gets closer, we will have a sign up sheet for which day you will give your
presentation. Please note, if we go to an online format for lecture, you may just be turning in the
powerpoint and not giving an oral presentation (if this occurs you will need to include all the details in
the slides themselves or the notes portion at the bottom of the slides).
The microbe I want you to talk about is “Neisseria meningitidis (bacterial meningitis)

**Please write about one unknown first (ex: Gram (+) followed by the other ex: Gram (-))
*Identify your microbe again by letter AND for the first time by Genus & species at the END of each
section.
4. Discussion of ONE microbe of your choice that was supplied to you on a posted list OR one of
the two microbes identified in this unknown project OR if your presentation is on a bacteria you
may discuss that (two (2) full pages) – Note: Your discussion must be at least two full pages = 27
pts. (15 pts. for content, 5 pts. for inclusion of references within text, & 7 pts. for length of two full
pages)

and NOT including your lab manual, although you may use your textbook as one of your references).
Please see instructions for the first unknown paper on HOW to reference and avoid plagiarism!

large enough to read.)

And the unknown bacteria that I found is "E. erogenes" Alphabetical List of Microbes (and the diseases they cause) that you may choose to write a 2-page discussion for your Mixed Unknown Report (Choose ONE only!) (Note: A “zoonotic” is a microbe that is transmitted to humans via animals.) o Agrobacterium tumefaciens (plant pathogen that causes crown gall disease in plants & has also been revolutionary in promotion of plant biotechnology) o Bartonella henselae (zoonotic that causes “cat scratch fever”) o Bordetella pertussis (pertussis/whooping cough) o Borrelia bergdorferi (Lyme disease) o Brucella melitensis (zoonotic that causes brucellosis/Malta fever/undulant fever) o Chlamydia trachomatis (STD chlamydia) o Clostridium botulinum (botulism/food poisoning/nervous system disorder flaccid paralysis & other) o Clostridium tetani (tetanus/nervous system disorder “lockjaw”/muscle rigidity & other) o Corynebacterium diphtheriae (diphtheria/suffocation) o Deinococcus radiodurans (not a pathogen - extremophile that is unusually resilient) o E. coli (gastroenteritis/UTI/other) and/or E. coli O157:H7 (hemorrhagic colitis/hemolytic uremic syndrome/other) o Francisella tularensis (zoonotic that causes tularemia; one of the most infectious bacteria known - ~10 cells are enough to cause disease!) o Haemophilus ducreyi (STD – “cancroid”/genital ulcers) o Haemophilus influenzae (pediatric meningitis) o Helicobacter pylori (peptic ulcers) o Legionella pneumophila (Legionnaires’ disease) o Listeria monocytogenes (listeriosis/often fatal food poisoning) o Magnetospirillum magneticum (not a pathogen - name should speak for itself!) o Mycobacterium tuberculosis (tuberculosis) o Myxococcus xanthus (“communicating bacteria” with unusual properties!) o Neisseria gonorrhoeae (STD - gonorrhea) o Neisseria meningitidis (bacterial meningitis) o Pseudomonas aeruginosa (opportunistic pathogen that infects primarily those with compromised immune systems, burn victims & cystic fibrosis patients - causes UTIs, respiratory infections, dermatitis, soft tissue infections, GI, bone & joint infections & systemic infections) o Rickettsia rickettsii (Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever) o Salmonella enterica (salmonellosis/food poisoning) o Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi (typhoid fever) o Shigella dysenteriae and/or Shigella flexneri (shigellosis/severe form of dysentery/diarrhea) o Staphylococcus aureus/MRSA (boils & impetigo (skin infections), food poisoning, cellulitis, osteomyelitis, pneumonia, endocarditis, staphylococcal toxic shock syndrome) o Streptococcus pyogenes (pharyngitis/”strep throat”, impetigo, erysipelas, scarlet fever, necrotizing fasciitis, myositis, endocarditis, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome) o Treponema pallidum pallidum (STD - syphilis) o Vibrio cholera (cholera/severe diarrhea) oYersinia pestis(bubonic plague)
