The past few years have been significant for wildfires in the U.S. This comes on the heels of previous bad seasons, such as 2018, which included the “Carr” fire and the “Camp” fires in California. Big challenges were faced because of urban/wildland interface issues that had to be dealt with, since numerous homes are being built in wooded areas. This week you will read about a major fire that occurred in Colorado called “The Hayman Fire” and you will learn about the resources that have to be marshaled to respond to these types of incidents. While there have been a number of significant wildfires since this one in 2002, including the Waldo Canyon fire in Colorado Springs in 2012 and the California fires in 2018, 2020 and 2021, this case study, while a bit dated, remains one of the best to be found when studying wildfire impacts.
