Write an essay (1,000-1,250 words) that is structured as a letter written to a hypothetical layperson in your church. For the sake of this assignment, assume that this person is generally thoughtful, well-read, open-minded, and with whom you share a good working friendship. The letter is a response to this person asking you, “What is theology, and why should I care?”
While this assignment is a letter, the writing must be academic in manner, including a concise thesis that explains your argument. A good letter should also avoid informal language (e.g., no contractions or misspelled words). Furthermore, the writing must be clear and concise. While you can at times use first person language, try to avoid first person as much as possible.
The substance of the paper must include the following:
A definition of theology and the theological task (within this summary, be sure to clearly address the question, “What is the purpose of theology?”)
A descriiption of the various approaches to defining theology (“What are some major options as to what theology is, exactly?”)
An explanation of how systematic theology relates to historical theology, biblical theology, philosophical theology, and pastoral theology
Throughout the essay, concisely explain to this person why theology matters.
