Early in the season Karyn injured her right knee during a gymnastics practice. She is a local high school gymnast.

Three weeks ago she underwent an arthroscopy and partial medial meniscectomy. Karyn has been attending physical therapy and has a normal gait, no effusion, and has achieved normal range of motion of the knee. She is ready to begin a more aggressive strengthening program with the Athletic Trainer (AT) at her high school (HS). The new program has effective, efficient, and appropriate strengthening exercises using kinetic chain activities. The HS has an athletic training facility with appropriate rehabilitation equipment.

List six progressive exercises the AT might give Karyn in this scenario. Please justify your answer for each exercise and the criteria for progression. Please cite the sources of your information!
Please feel free to ask quality questions amongst your peers and offer your point of view and suggestions.

There is little known about the very young and very old athlete. Choose one of these populations and discuss why you feel they are part of active population. What reservations do you have of this population being active in a sport? Is there a sport you feel this population should stay away from? If so, what are they and why. Discuss what can be occurring in the body that heeds this reservations.
For example:
A 69 year old woman who chooses to taking on a sprint triathlon. Reservations: can include injury to the shoulder for swimming, decreased ROM, overuse syndrome…. but then again, this can be any age group! Maybe she should stay away from the running because……….. why? This should lead to a good discussion among the group!

Assignment 1:
1) Read ONE of the following documents about emergency planning in sport. Choose the paper that is relevant to the population you are discussing (either youth or high school):
The Inter-Association Task Force Document on Emergency Health and Safety: Best-Practice Recommendations for Youth Sports Leagues
You should read the Youth Sports Leagues statement above for any youth sports NOT occurring in a high school setting. This includes any non-school based leagues in the community (e.g., Little League baseball, youth soccer leagues, PAL, Babe Ruth, parks & recreation leagues, etc.).
OR
If you are coaching or evaluating emergency preparedness in sports at a high school, read the statement below:
National Athletic Trainers’ Association Position Statement: Emergency Planning in Athletics
(links above)
2) Based on the recommendations in the document you read, choose one of the following scenarios and submit a 3-5 page paper addressing the scenario, and a 1 page reflection about what you learned.
All papers should be in the following format:
Submit a single document in Word
1″ margins
12-point font (Times New Roman or Arial)
Double-spaced
The document should be titled: LastnameFirst initial_317_Assn1 (e.g., SmithJ_317_Assn1)
Choose Scenario #1 or Scenario #2:
Scenario #1 (Coach): If you are a coach of a youth sport or high school sport, evaluate how prepared you are for an emergency at your primary practice location? Do you have an EAP? Are there trained responders on site? What steps should you take immediately to be more prepared to respond to a medical emergency? Submit a 3-5 page paper with an evaluation of your practice site and EAP, based on the document you read. After completing the evaluation of emergency preparation at the practice site, write a 1 page reflection about what you learned, and submit it as the final page in your assignment with the heading titled Reflection.
OR
Scenario #2 (Parent): As a parent or relative/friend/neighbor of a child playing a youth sport or high school sport, evaluate how prepared the organization or coaches are for an emergency at the primary practice location. Is there an EAP? Are there trained responders on site? What steps should be taken to be more prepared to respond to a medical emergency? Submit a 3-5 page paper with an evaluation of the practice site and EAP, based on the document you read. After completing the evaluation of emergency preparation at the practice site, write a 1 page reflection about what you learned. Submit the reflection as the final page in your assignment, with a heading titled: Reflection.
CITE the paper you read for the assignment.
You should NOT do additional research in order to complete the assignment.
Your paper should be based on how well your practice site meets the best practices criteria outlined in the position paper you read. Refer to specific criteria from the document.
NOTE: If you are not a coach or parent of child currently playing youth sports, it’s allowable to assess the practice site of a friend, neighbor or family member who is coaching or has a child playing. Contact me if you have questions.

Thread 1: Skin Lesions
Three members of a high school boys basketball team come in to see the AT because they each have round, slightly raised lesions on different parts of their bodies (neck, face, chest, back). The AT recognizes they all have ringworm. What is ringworm? How is it acquired; how is it spread; how is it treated? What advice should the AT give the boys on managing the problem? Should they be allowed to continue playing basketball right now? Why do three players on the same team have the same skin condition? Should the AT be concerned about other players? Can this issue be prevented?
Please cite your reliable and scholarly sources of information.

Thread 2: Head Injury
For this week’s discussion you must first watch the video (41:45):
Big Hits Broken Dreams

Next, write a reflective response that includes a minimum of 3 key take-away points. You must use an outside resource to support (or refute) information found in the video; this should be a scholarly resource (e.g., peer-reviewed journal article). Make sure that you choose a resource with the most current information on the topic you are discussing.
How do you feel about the video?
Should there be stiffer penalties for those who spear, use faulty equipment, or encourage injury to others?
Should there be tighter parameters on age of when collision sports are played?
Should there be more regulation of coaches and if so, what would that look like? If no, indicate why.
Should a qualified medical provider like an AT be required to be present for collision and contact sports?
You MUST support your statements, including your opinion, with evidence!

PICK ONLY 1
Thread 1: Elbow
There is a great deal of stress on the medial elbow while throwing. An 11-year old baseball player who pitches and plays shortstop on two different teams complains of pain in the medial elbow when throwing. Discuss one of the structures at risk, and describe common signs or symptoms of that specific condition. What factors place this player at higher risk for injury? Please cite scholarly sources of information.

Thread 2: Shoulder
Thread 2: Shoulder
A female high school volleyball player consistently experiences pain when serving the ball overhand. She also indicates that it is worse when she spikes the ball. She has been diagnosed with shoulder impingement, and is on a rehabilitation program to strengthen her rotator cuff muscles. What is shoulder impingement? What structures are involved? Why is she on a rotator cuff strength program? Are there muscles other than the rotator cuff that she will likely need to strengthen as well? Explain.
Please cite your reliable and scholarly sources of information.

Thread 1: Ankle
Lateral ankle sprains (LAS) are the most common type of ankle injury. Which sports are LAS most prevalent (hint: there are epidemiological studies for high school and collegiate sports that may contain this info.)? What is the most common mechanism of a LAS? What other injuries may occur with this mechanism? What aspects of the ankle anatomy make us more prone to LAS? What is the difference between a LAS and a “high” ankle sprain? What are the secondary structures that help provide stability to the lateral ankle?
Please cite scholarly sources.

Thread 2: Heel Pain
A physically active 13-year-old boy is complaining of pain at the posterior heel below the attachment of the achilles tendon. What are the possible reasons for his pain and what is the most likely cause? Explain your reasoning. What is the anatomical significance of the location of his pain? Does his age make a difference in how he should be managed? Are there any risks in ignoring the problem? Are there other locations in the body in which similar conditions occur?
Please cite your scholarly sources.

Thread 1: Dealing with Hot Environmental Conditions
This is a threaded discussion so everyone does NOT need an original post. Choose one of the prompts below to get started in the discussion. Make sure all of the questions in the prompts are addressed during the week’s discussion.
What is the impact of humidity when combined with hot conditions in a sports setting?
What is the most accurate method of monitoring the temperature and humidity?
What is the “gold standard” for treating exertional heat stroke (EHS) in sports?
When should an individual with EHS be transported to the hospital?
What is the TACO method of treating EHS? When is using TACO preferable to cold water immersion (CWI)?
One person should NOT answer all of the questions in the prompts!
The discussion should run similarly to a real-time classroom discussion, so please respond to one another as if you were talking and asking questions. Playing “devils advocate” is allowed (just be respectful)!
Be sure to cite reliable and scholarly sources of information!

Thread 2: EAP
What are the main components of an emergency action plan (EAP) for athletics?
What is the purpose of a venue-specific EAP?
What are the best practice recommendations for secondary school athletics?
What are the best practice recommendations for youth sports (non-school-affiliated)?
What are important considerations for the coach of a youth sport team that plays somewhere that has no on-site medical services available? What are your “top 3” & why?
