n the Current Issues Assignment, you will investigate a current issue occurring in the business
of sport. Topics may come from policies implemented by a sport governing body, legal or ethical
issues being faced by sport organizations, financial topics, etc. If you are unsure whether your
topic would be appropriate, contact your professor. Your assignment will inform the reader about
everything they need to know about the given topic. You will need to use a minimum of five (5)
sources.
INSTRUCTIONS
This assignment will consist of the following sections:
 Title Page: Follow the APA style guide.
 Overview of the Issue: A one paragraph summary of the issue to be discussed.
 Key Concepts: Make a connection to SMGT issues covered so far in the text.
Specifically, these should relate to one or more of the functional areas of sport
management: Management, Marketing, Finance, Law, and Ethics.
 Organizations Involved: A list and descriiption of the organizations that are impacted by
this issue. Consider the multiple levels of sport, media, sponsors, host community, etc.
 Individuals Involved: A list and descriiption of the key individuals who have a role to
play in this issue.
 Timeline of Important Events: Provide a brief history of the issue in chronological
format including the key happenings involving the organizations/people above.
Depending on the issue, you may not be able to include each event in your timeline.
 News Stories: Include a brief summary with links to key news stories. A focus should be
placed on articles from reputable news sources, and those articles where news first broke,
and/or articles that provide thorough information. At least three (3) stories should be
referred to in this section.
 Reference Page: Your reference list should include a minimum of five (5) sources. All
sources should be cited using APA style. Each source should also be cited properly in the
body of the paper when information from that source is used.
Format: The body of your paper should be a minimum of four (4) pages (the page count does
not include the Title Page or the Reference Page). Use one-inch margins, double-spaced lines,
and 12-point Times New Roman font. The Overview, Key Concepts, and News Stories should be
written in sentence/paragraph form. The Organizations Involved, Individuals Involved, and
Timeline of Important Events sections may use bullet points, but complete sentences must be
used in the descriiptions (like what you see in the instructions above). Since this is your summary
of the issue based on what you have read, the wording should be your own; do not use quotes, or
copy/paste information.
Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.

Annotations: Read Dryer et al., 2018 and write an annotation. Watch for the feedback the academic coaches gave you for annotation 1 so you do not repeat the same mistakes and get full credit. An annotation includes a short summary of the source, an evaluation of its quality, usefulness, and application. You should be able to summarize the source, evaluate its quality, explain how it is used in sports settings/events, or how it relates to other articles in the class clearly and concisely in 3-5 paragraphs. This assignment is designed to check your ability to analyze and interpret sport studies and effectively apply written business and professional communication skills.

Select a sport event that is occurring this weekend – you can attend live or watch live but I want you to experience the event as “live” as possible, not just read about it later.
Watch the event and take notes about the discourse or communication that you see happening within the sport event/broadcast itself (including appropriate social media platforms). You might ask the following questions:
What voices are part of this sport event’s communication patterns?
How many different ways is communication happening at this event?
What symbols, visuals, spaces, or other modes of communication do I notice?
If possible, watch your fellow spectators for connections to our class. You might ask the following questions:
Does this sport create a “discourse community”?
What are fans reacting to: play, off-field/court issues, sponsors/media?
After the event, with your notes and class materials in hand, create a 2 page typed essay (12 pt font max, 1” margins, double spaced) that answers the following questions:
-How did your event meet the definition of sport “discourse” from our text?
-Use one class term in this section and bold that term, citing its pg #
-How did your event illustrate the definition of sport (no S) from our book?
-Use one class term in this section and bold that term, citing its pg #
Provide 2 unique, insightful observations about the sport discourse you observed.
Hint: Go big here, not just “the coach was mad” but “the coach seemed to use an aggressive form of masculine authority to make his point to players, it didn’t seem to always work, based on the players’ faces at the bench.”
No bolded terms required; see grading guidelines below:
Your assignment will be graded for basic writing mechanics, fulfillment of all parts of assignment, depth of reflection on course material, specifics of original observations.
Please note that bolded terms should be followed by an in-text citation of their page # in our course text. (For example: “The coach used masculine authority (17) to make the point to his players.”)
USE Communication and Sport

Group Project (20%)
During this project you will work in teams and be assigned one of three esports “specialties”: professional esports teams, collegiate esports teams, or production companies. Once assigned, teams will then be tasked with analyzing a small group of current teams or companies within their entity.
(Note: It states group project but its individual project. I was provided collegiate esports team as topic of choice.)
This analysis will investigate

The group presentation will be a collaborative effort and the group will be given 20 minutes to present their topic and 10 minutes for Q&A. The presentation should be well-researched, organized, and engaging. Visual aids such as PowerPoint slides, videos, and images are strongly encouraged. All members of each group will receive the same grade.
The presentation will be graded on the following criteria:

You are expected to follow the program plan as outlined in your textbook and as discussed in class. Be sure all elements of the program plan are included. All information provided needs to be real – that means you will need to conduct research (for example on your target group, other opportunities for the program in the area, needs assessment, etc.).
You will need to develop your program plan based on the information provided from the MRU recreation survey, as well consider the goals outlined in Framework for Recreation in Canada 2015 Pathways to Wellbeing. You are limited only by your imagination regarding the types of activities, formats, experience, age groups, etc. you select. There are no constraints except those you impose by the selections you make as you develop the project. You should demonstrate your ability to implement the steps of the Program Development Cycle included in your text and prepare a comprehensive program plan.
This is to be a professionally written plan. All written material should be well developed, clear, accurate, and concise. This is your opportunity to demonstrate your ability to apply the concepts and techniques covered in class to developing a designed experience, for a specific population, within the context of a given agency. Information should be researched and supported with documentation. There is no minimum number of references needed, rather the plan will be assessed on if enough information was included to provide a clear picture of the content.
