You will complete a 6-page paper (including title and reference pages) reporting on a series of at least 4 news articles on a topic of their choice related to marriage and the family. You should pick articles from newspapers (local, national, or international) and/or magazines, which you may access online through the Cannon Memorial Library (see information about the library in this syllabus). The articles taken together should cover different perspectives on the same issue, as well as events that show how the issue affects people’s lives, so that you can provide a fairly comprehensive and balanced review of the topic in the news. For instance, a paper on gay marriage may include articles on protests for or against it, accounts of weddings of gay couples, commentary on proposed legislation, etc. You should apply at least one of the theories reviewed in the course to analyze the issue you are covering in a balanced fashion. You may also include additional sources as needed to provide background on the issue you chose, but most of the paper should be based on the news articles. The paper should include a cross-cultural dimension, using at least two completely different social groups. The paper will be submitted to Turnitin.com. Sociology majors should format it using the ASA formatting style, Grading will be based on the following elements:

The key criteria for whether your interviewee is appropriate is whether you can delineate how his or her culture differs from yours. This interview must be in person, not conducted by e-mail or telephone, or in a virtual setting, although you can follow up if needed in this way. The interview should last at least 30 minutes and be scheduled at the convenience of your interviewee. You can tell them the purpose of the interview (that is, to shed light on cultural values for a class project) and you can assure them that you will change their name for the sake of anonymity. Your paper should focus on differences in psychological processes (e.g., development processes like child rearing, cognition, attitudes toward mental illness and its treatment, etc.) between your culture and that of the person you are interviewing.
