Discussion Forum Topic Week 1
Columbus’ men and other colonizers saw and experienced many biological and environmental issues caused by nature that they did not expect to find in the New World. Their mindsets were set on expansion, gold, and riches. With this as their focus, it seemed that they were not prepared for what was to come from living in a new area, with new challenges, and people occupying the land first.
One biological issue that brought many deaths in the New World was sicknesses and diseases that were brought from Columbus’ men and other colonizers from the Old World. Native American’s did not have the antibodies capable to fight off these diseases that were new to their bodies. Though there was a lot of different diseases that spread through the Native Americans, smallpox was one of the worst and most deadly that spread through them. This epidemic lasted nearly 400 years or more and declined Native Americans at such a fast rate (Crosby, 292). Native American’s were essential for Columbus’s men and other colonizers, but it was clear they could not see that at the time with the mass murder that was placed on the Natives. With diseases like smallpox killing off thousands of Natives and the genocide of the Natives that took place, Columbus, his men, and the other colonizers did not realize just how important the Natives truly were to their survival.
One big environmental issue that caused issues for Columbus’ men and other colonizers was the different plants and agriculture in the New World. Columbus was set on gold, and he had visions and thoughts that it was going to be growing in fields. When Columbus met the Arawak Indians, he saw that they had a developed agriculture of corn, yams, and cassava (Zinn, 5). This led Columbus to capture some of the Arawak’s and took them upon his ship as prisoners, thinking he could force them to show him where the gold was (Zinn, 5). This hunger for gold and riches, led him to make false promises to the King and Queen back in Spain and brought some trouble for Columbus. Not only did he give false promises of gold, but he also caused wars and killings because of enslaving the Natives. Columbus saw this agriculture a price, but it was not the value he expected it to be.
Columbus and other colonizers coming to the New World were in search of wealth, power, and expansion. Them coming to the New World caused many issues for themselves and the Native Americans who were living there. Some major issues were epidemics and agriculture, that led to many problems for Columbus, the colonizers, and the Natives.

Documentary films of varying lengths are being used in place of a textbook. Before beginning your submission, it is expected that all of the films that pertain to this assignment be viewed, and these have all been labeled as Compare/Contrast Film.
Comparing & Contrasting:
1. Use 2 separate documentary films. Choose 1 artwork from each film.
2. Make sure the 2 artworks are completely different mediums. Some examples: paint, graphite/pencil, charcoal, clay/ceramic, marble, bronze, glass, wood, etc.
3. Make sure the 2 artworks are not of the same type, meaning you cannot discuss 2 paintings despite one being acrylic and another oil, or 2 sculptures despite one being bronze and the other marble, etc. The idea is to discuss 2 artworks that obviously seem different at first glance.
4. Discuss how the 2 artworks are different both visually, thematically, and in their mediums/use of materials.
5. Discuss what makes the 2 artworks similar.
Do not go to Google for answers to the questions or supporting information. The comparing & contrasting experience is about you telling me your very own thoughts and observations while considering/discussing your chosen artworks from the documentary films.
If any portion of your entry is not yours, meaning you used/referred to other sources, your journal entry will receive a zero.
Writing your Submission:
Write a short essay that answers the above criteria in no more than 250 words.
Be sure to document which films you chose. In addition, you must not forget to provide the titles of each artwork and time stamp them accordingly from the film they appeared in (Riace Bronze at 12:16 in “Beneath the Calabrian Sea”). Sometimes the films can be sketchy with art piece titles, so this is security for backing you up. The purpose of this exercise is to promote critical thinking. Be sure to provide detailed and supportive answers.
The best method for entering your essays into canvas is to cut and paste them after they have been through spell checking and translating.
Points will be distributed in this manner:
Original and relevant content (10 points max) – Displaying you have studied and are knowledgeable of the material by writing your own thoughts and feelings regarding the material’s content.
A critical analysis (10 points max) – Exhibiting you have engaged with the material by providing original, insightful observations and thought-provoking commentary.
Quality of writing (10 points max) – Cleary and concisely articulates ideas and feelings about the material utilizing good sentence fluency (syntax), spelling, and grammar. College-level writing is required.
DO NOT use outside sources to help write your journal entry.
DO NOT attach word docs or pdf files. Attached files that require downloading for viewing will NOT be looked at and will earn a zero.

please respond to Jessica with 150. words
When Columbus arrived in the new world, he and his men encountered many different issues. These men had no idea of how they would affect the natives. Some of these issues included the difference in culture, the introduction of unfamiliar diseases to the natives and the destruction of the natives. As we know, every Native Tribe had their own set of languages and customs. No two tribes were the same. This of course caused the Europeans to not be able to communicate with the Natives, and vice versa. Because of the lack of communication, Columbus would have to use force in order for the Natives to understand, “This was to have enormous consequences; it led Columbus to take some of them aboard ship as prisoners because he insisted that they guide him to the source of the gold” (Zinn p. 3) This later caused tensions between the Natives and the later settlers along the way.
After the Europeans began to spend more time near the natives, their germs spread like wildfire. We know that Europeans most likely came into contact with various diseases back in Europe. The natives, were not immune to these at all, “The early chronicles of America are full of reports of horrendous epidemics and steep population declines, confirmed in many cases by recent quantitative analyses of Spanish tribute records and other sources” (Crosby p. 3). As these new diseases kept spreading through the native population, many were dying left and right. Only a few survived. Smallpox proved to be the most lethal of all the diseases.
The natives then suffered a lot at the hands of the Spanish and other Europeans. They were enslaved, and they were separated. The men were sent to work in the mines and the women were sent to work in the fields. The husbands and wives would see each other very rarely, and they stopped procreating because of their depression and suffering. “As for the newly born, they died early because their mothers, overworked and famished, had no mild to nurse them…Some mothers drowned their babies from sheer desperation” (Zinn p.6). The mercy killing of the native children shows just how miserable the natives came to be. They no longer were able to survive, and many mothers chose to save their children from that kind of suffering.
