Chapter # 1
Overview
The topic of Chapter 1 is an introduction to real estate principles. This chapter covers four important concepts for the real estate student. First, the real estate licensing in California is discussed, along with the real estate market. Second, the historical influence of real property is examined. Third, the difference between real property and personal property is spelled out clearly. And last, the chapter concludes by analyzing various methods of land description. These concepts are important because they may be on the real estate exam for licensees.
Key Concept from Chapter 7
I learned that real estate can be a profitable professional (p. 4). One of the reasons it can be profitable is because the compensation to agents is based on the sales price of the house. In California, real estate values are typically high, which translates into a high commission. The commission is always paid to the broker, but the real estate salesperson receives a portion. Many real estate agents are using social media to promote their services.
Key Concept from Chapter 8
The second thing I learned is that property owners have a “bundle of rights” (p. 5). It means they have control of certain things because they own the real estate. Generally, people view it as a bundle of sticks, with each one of them being a “right” the owner has. Their types of rights vary based on their level of ownership. For example, homeowners have the right to possess (live in) their houses – unless they rent out the house to tenants. In that case, the tenant now has the right to possess the house.
Key Concept from Chapter 7 or 8
The third concept I learned is the definition of real property (p. 6). There are four things that define real property: land, affixed to the land, appurtenant to the land, or immovable. These items “tests” are what separates real property from personal property. For example, a refrigerator can be moved out of the house, so it is considered personal property. However, a fence is permanently dug into the ground so it becomes part of the real property, along with the land and the house.
Summary
This was an interesting chapter and I learned a lot about real estate. Real estate has a long and colorful history in California. There are several types of land description methods, which will probably be on the state real estate exam. I know I will have to study some of the concepts further, such as the MARIA acronym of determining personal versus real property. In addition to the knowledge of concepts, real estate involves math calculations.

Week 3 Discussion
I believe that the period of Enlightenment was indeed an important catalyst in European intellectual history between the Middle Ages and the present. To justify my belief, I’ll explain the connection with the scientific revolution in pre-modern Europe by considering key insights provided throughout our readings.
In “Southern Barbarians”, Boxer sheds light on the economic and cultural exchanges between Europe and Asia during the Age of Exploration. Cultural exchange is when people of two or more different backgrounds trade ideas, feelings, stories, and customs. While the main point of the reading might not be directly about the period of Enlightenment, it can be argued that the different interactions and exposure to diverse cultures during this period contributed to the Enlightenment’s emphasis on reason, liberality, and the exchange of ideas.
In “Copernicus, the Man, the Work, and Its History” Hartner focuses on the scientific revolution and the contributions of Copernicus to astronomy. Copernicus’s heliocentric model challenged traditional views. This was a major factor in contributing to the foundation of the scientific mindset of the Enlightenment period. There was a direct shift from geocentrism to heliocentrism that reflected a departure from old ways of thinking and made way for new perspectives. These new perspectives are in direct alignment with the Enlightenment principles of reason and liberality as well.
In “The Sea Common to All” by Craig A. Lockard, he explores maritime history and the interactions between different societies. The connection between this reading and the Enlightenment is not too clear to me in this reading, but the text does discuss the Age of Exploration. This alone partly contributes to the broader view of the world as a whole and the questioning of traditional and outdated beliefs. I believe this new way of thinking contributes to the Enlightenment because of the idea of challenging established norms.

Discussion of Week 3
The period of Enlightenment was a transformative era in European intellectual history, laying the groundwork for huge advancements in various fields.
One key aspect connecting this through history is the emphasis on challenging traditional beliefs and relying on factual evidence. The thinkers of the Enlightenment tried to question established figures in the world, whether it be political, religious, or philosophical. They embraced reason as a means of understanding the world and advocated for the use of scientific methods to uncover truths.
The Scientific Revolution in Europe played a huge role in paving the way for the discoveries of the Enlightenment. Religious men such as Copernicus, Galileo, and Newton made groundbreaking advancements in astronomy, physics, and other scientific fields. Their discoveries challenged beliefs and showcased the power of observation, experimentation, and logic in understanding the natural world.
Moreover, the scientific revolution inspired the intellectual climate of the Enlightenment. It encouraged people to question current thinking, and seek other explanations for things going on. This new mindset helped prioritize hard found evidence and rejected blind faith by use of investigation. As a result, it helped to create an atmosphere of curiosity that encouraged people to engage in new ideas and creativity, instead of accepting traditional beliefs. “The sudden emergence of new information during the Scientific Revolution called into question religious beliefs, moral principles, and the traditional scheme of nature.” (Brush Scientific Revolution)
However, not all the discoveries of the Enlightenment were only attributed to the scientific revolution. While scientific progress definitely contributed significantly, a lot of other factors also played importance. For instance, the rise of the printing press and the spread of knowledge through books created the spreading of ideas and intellectual thought. This wide spread of information created intellectuals to challenge established rules and create discourse.
In conclusion, the Enlightenment marked a significant turning point in intellectual history, where reason and evidence became necessary. While the discoveries of the scientific revolution played a crucial role in shaping this era, other factors like the spread of knowledge and the rise of new philosophical ideas also contributed. The Enlightenment’s impact went beyond science, and led to new ideas spreading all across Europe and the later world.

Literary Analysis Essay
Description: Literary analysis involves the process of closely examining, interpreting, and critiquing various aspects of a literary work. It delves into themes, symbols, characters, settings, plot structures, and stylistic devices, among other elements, to reveal the deeper meanings and implications conveyed by the author. Furthermore, literary analysis enables us to bridge the gap between personal interpretation and a broader, shared understanding of literature’s richness and diversity. Ultimately, the aim of literary analysis is to illuminate the work’s intrinsic value, convey its societal and philosophical implications, and foster a profound understanding of the author’s intentions and the broader cultural or historical context. You will choose one work of fiction we’ve read thus far and write a short (4-5 page) literary analysis paper. Your job for this paper is to articulate a clear argument (thesis) about the text you’ve chosen and support this argument with evidence from the text.
The text is:
“The Fall of the House of Usher” — Edgar Allan Poe
the full text can be found herehttps://www.owleyes.org/text/fall-house-usher/read…
Guidelines and Grading:
Length: 5 pages, double-spaced, size 12 Times New Roman font, Citiation pages not included
Format: MLA (please see Purdue OWL for guidelines and examples)
Your paper should have and will be graded on the following elements:
– An interesting title that hints at the topic of the essay
– A clear and reasonable thesis statement
– An introduction paragraph that introduces the claim that the writer is making and provides adequate historical context
– Well-organized body paragraphs that use evidence from the text(s) to support the writer’s claims.
– A conclusion paragraph that does not simply restate the introduction paragraph but offers relevant commentary on the text(s) the writer is analyzing.
– Writing that is reasonably clear of spelling errors and grammatical errors
– Smoothly integrated quotations and paraphrase from the text(s) the writer is assessing
– A work cited page in correct MLA format
Also the second part of this project:Creative Component to Paper II (Literary Analysis Essay)
Otherwise Known as the “Choose Your Own Adventure” Assignment
Project Description:
This project will demonstrate the argument that you articulated in your literary analysis essay in a creative format. Remember that your creative work should not simply reproduce or summarize the text that you wrote about—it should articulate your interpretation of or argument about the text.
Components of Project:
Proposal
Creative work
Artist Statement
Proposal: You will write a short (about 100 words) description of your rough plan for the project. You will remind me which text you wrote about in your literary analysis paper, the argument or interpretation that you made in that paper, and your ideas on what kind of creative project you want to complete. I will give you feedback on this proposal.
Creative Work: This is the actual creative work that you’ll be submitting. See the below guidelines on how to choose a creative medium.
Artist Statement: You will write a 2-page, double-spaced Artist Statement in which you explain the choices that you made for this creative project. Why did you choose the medium that you did? What was your design process like? Explain your choices regarding things like color, image, sound, spacing, word choice, etc. How did these choices work together to communicate your argument/interpretation of the literary text?
Guide to Choosing a Project:
You may choose a media-based or a low-tech medium for interpreting your chosen text. Some of the options below employ a written medium and some employ visual mediums, but all of them, in one way or another, require you to be creative and to use methods other than academic writing. Use this opportunity to apply any skills you already have, or wish to develop further, to the process of literary interpretation and close reading. You may choose any of the options listed below, or come up with your own. Make sure you have a clear focus, specific plan, and narrow topic. It needs to be manageable within the short amount of time you have this semester.
Some digital media options:
Write a series of blog posts in the voice of a character from your text (3 entries or so would be enough, depending on length)
Make a personal or professional website for a character with an “About me” page and related
Make a movie trailer for your chosen text
Make a short film (like something you could upload to youtube, or an independent short for the Sundance Festival)
Digital Storytelling
Mini comic book
Video essay or photo essay
Interactive poster
Audio Essay
Podcast (Think “Freakonomics” and “This American Life”)
Create an interactive, multimedia edition of a text/passage
Digital art
Animation
VLOG entry as a character or author
Digital photograph and/or Photoshop project
Any digital art medium is welcome
content.
Note: Many of you hold the technology required for some of these projects in your pockets, literally. You have video, audio, and photo capabilities on your phone. Used carefully and thoughtfully, this is fair game—You don’t have to own a fancy digital camera with special lenses to do this, but if you do own one, and know how, by all means, use it.
Some low-tech options:
Written:
Re-write the end of the story (best for longer, narrative texts, rather than poems)
Imitate a poetic form and/or genre (i.e.- medieval alliterative poetry, dream vision, or romance)
Write a prequel or sequel to a story, or fill in a missing part in the middle of a narrative
Parody or satirical re-writing
Re-write a story, changing the setting to a modern context
Poetic response/interpretation to another text
Write a character’s firsthand experiences in diary/journal form
Write a screen-play or play/Broadway/opera adaption of a narrative
Visual:
Visual reconstruction of a setting in the text
Draw or paint a specific passage from the text
Portraits of characters (1 amazing one, or a series of 2-3 related portraits)
Photography (not snapshots of your friends at lunch, but carefully composed pieces, this can be
digital as well)
Collage
Cartoon/comic strip
Sculpture
Music (write and record a song)
Mini graphic novel or comic book
Any fine arts based visual interpretations are acceptable here
Grading:
The proposal is a brainstorming assignment—you will get full credit if you pass it in on time and answer the questions.
For your creative project, I will pay special attention to execution, thoughtfulness, interpretation/argument, and evidence (which can be laid out in the Artist Statement). The thoughtfulness and interpretation will weigh most heavily. However, in large part, this project is about the learning experience of responding to and thinking critically about literature in new mediums. Occasionally, I have had students develop a great plan and work really hard on it, only to have it not turn out exactly as they thought (sometimes this can lead to great results anyways!). Because of the sometimes-unpredictable nature of creative and also digital work, effort does matter a great deal for this assignment. Unlike your traditional essays, which can be evaluated on stricter criteria that don’t necessarily involve the amount the effort you put into the assignment, this project demands a different approach.
Your Artist Statement will be graded on the quality and detail of your justification of your creative choices. By reading your Artist Statement, I should be able to understand why you chose the medium that you did, why you made the design choices that you did, and how those design choices affected your communication of your argument.
Last comment “I appreciate you getting this in early, but I do wish you had consulted with me beforehand. My main concern about this essay is that it’s a rhetorical analysis essay, not a literary analysis essay. I strongly suggest that you re-do this essay so that it follows the assignment requirements.

Part I –
Hello everyone! John Wallace here. From the great state of North Carolina, originally. Did 24 years in the Coast Guard, so I’ve been all over. Currently, I’m a Safety Officer at a major hospital in Tennesse, and while I do all things a Safety Officer normally does, my main function is to oversee the fire safety program, which basically entails doing over 135 fire drills per year. Down the road from this degree, I want to stay in hospital safety, just at a higher level.
Part II –
The most effective organizational setup for the safety function, in my opinion, is for it to be its own animal, so to speak. At my hospital, the Office of Clinical and Research Safety (OCRS) is an entity unto itself for good reason. In a culture of regulation like healthcare, with The Joint Commision, CAP, laws and rules governing animal research, and a hundred other regulatory bodies at play in the hospital, it’s useful in our case to be apart from all that. Our only stake is in the safe operation of clinical and research functions. This comes at a price, however, in that OCRS lacks teeth of its own to bite if a department is operating outside of safety practices. Because of that, genuine relationship building is critical between departmental leaders. In an advisory role, and with the appropriate level of buy-in, OCRS has been effective at rattling the right cages to get policy and practices changed.
I think it’s important to discuss why the major “con” of the toothless safety officer (me) is also the biggest “pro.” Because most of the hospital staff are aware I hold no power over them, they do feel comfortable enough around me to tell me if something is out of alignment with safety practices. Fear of reporting is probably one of the most dangerous phenomena that happens in a hospital setting, so having a non-authority figure to tell about an issue can be invaluable.

please respond to Tracie with. 200. words
Hello everyone. My name is Tracie Hecht. I currently reside in West Texas where I work as a Safety Manager for small service company in the oil and gas industry. I previously worked remotely for a large pharmacy/retail corporation and recently decided to get back into HSE in the oil and gas sector. My goal is to use the knowledge gain while completing my masters as well as the experience working in my current company to allow me to sit for my CSP and ultimately move into a safety role for a larger corporation.
I have worked for both large corporations and mom and pop businesses and seen where safety was it’s own division and also seen where there is one person who is does it all. In the company I currently work for, safety falls under operations. The main benefit to this structure is that there is a direct line to managers in order to make changes faster. However, the main drawback is that safety often takes a back seat to the priorities of operations.
I think that safety being a support unit independent of operations is best. When it is structured this way, the safety department provides input and guidance but operations must take ownership of the safety culture within their departments. The dotted line allows for collaboration with operations but also the freedom to make decisions independently of operations. The main drawback I have seen from this is that getting alignment between the two takes longer because the decisions must go up the chain and back down on both sides.
