This will be a Research Statement to apply for an Assistant Professor position in the Exercise Science department.
My research focus will be on reducing the detrimental effects of age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia). I want to conduct research on the effects of high-intensity resistance training (heavier weight) vs. low-intensity resistance training (lighter weight) on increasing type-II muscle fibers. This research is warranted because studies show that muscle strength is a primary factor for mobility limitations seen among older individuals. Furthermore, type II fibers have the highest level of muscular strength and have been shown to decrease more in both number and size as a person ages, when compared to type I fibers.
