Scholarly Book Review – The final component of this course is for you to read one of the assigned books, Out-of-Control Criminal Justice, and write a scholarly book review. For this assignment, you must cite at least five peer-reviewed articles, not books, in your review. You may cite books but you have to have at least 5 peer-reviewed articles. The articles students cite should be relevant and timely (e.g. no older than say 2010, unless they are considered to be ‘classics’). Your scholarly book review must be between 2000 to 2,500 words without the cover page or references. For this assignment, you need to do more than merely provide a synopsis of the book. Rather, provide a scholarly analysis of the book and explain what, if anything, it contributes to our understanding of criminal justice policy.

a) In his book, William Kelly argues that there are many collateral consequences associated with having a criminal record which can affect an ex-offender’s access to housing, employment, and even his or her ability to volunteer. In your opinion, if an ex-offender has completed his or her sentence and been released, should his or her criminal history be sealed and private, much like what is done with confidential medical records? Take a position either way and fully defend it. Be sure to elaborate completely. b) Next, in your opinion, should all courts recognize substance abuse as a medical problem? Explain why this would be either beneficial or detrimental to society? Be sure to demonstrate your familiarity with the assigned reading as you answer the question. c) Next, do you feel as though needle-exchange programs provide a useful service to drug addicts, or do they merely perpetuate addiction? Should these programs be funded by federal tax dollars? Please support your position. d) Next, after reflecting upon William Kelly’s discussion of gun violence, do you believe that it would be it would be sound policy to ban the sale of large capacity magazines (greater than ten rounds)? In your opinion, would this save lives, or would it be an infringement upon personal liberties? Do you think the Founding Father’s would approve of large capacity magazines if they were alive today? Elaborate. e) Finally, please point to one additional aspect of the reading that you found to be of interest. Be sure to explain what this particular aspect of the reading contributes to our understanding of criminal justice policy. f) Kindly, pose a critical thinking question to your classmates based on the readings for the week. Remember to properly cite and provide a reference section using APA.

Assuming this is true, and if the U.S. is, indeed, the wealthiest nation on Earth, in your opinion, should there be a guaranteed basic income for the poor? In other words, should poor people, especially those with young children, be entitled to basic amenities and services, even if they do not work? Please take a position either way and fully defend it. Regardless of the position you take, it must be evident that you have carefully considered and reflected upon the assigned reading for Week Two. b) Next, in your opinion, why do you suppose that drug courts are infrequently used in spite of the fact that they are often much less expensive than traditional criminal justice alternatives? Do you suppose this is likely to change anytime soon? Fully elaborate. c) Also, after reading about the various types of special problem solving courts, please propose a new type of problem solving court that is not identified in the book. Please be creative yet realistic. In other words, your idea should be something that could actually be implemented. Be sure to explain why there is a need for your proposed court and how it would benefit society. d) Next, in your opinion, should the criminal law recognize the impacts of mental and cognitive disabilities on behavior? In other words, if someone has significant mental and/or cognitive disorder, should this be taken into account by prosecutors and judges?
