a) In his book, Daniel Mearsw writes that for the last four decades, policymakers have relied on the excessive usage of incarceration, and this narrowly focused response to crime has been implemented with neither credible social scientific support nor overwhelming public support. Given the fact that mass incarceration is so costly, in your opinion, why do you suppose both Republicans and Democrats have been so adamant about sending people to prison? In your opinion, to what extent (if any), should policymakers consider either public opinion or social scientific data when formulating criminal justice policy? Fully elaborate. It should be evident that you have reflected upon the first 80 pages of the book. b) Next, given the high recidivism rates, it is evident that most prisons do not do a very good job of rehabilitating inmates. In order to change the prison culture, if you were a warden, would you permit inmates to evaluate correctional officers in written surveys (in much the same way that professors are evaluated by students)? Would this contribute in a positive or negative way to the institutional climate? Take a position either way and fully defend it. Be sure to fully elaborate explaining why this would be either advantageous or detrimental to rehabilitation. c) Next, please provide at least one original suggestion as to how correctional administrators can change prison culture in a meaningful way that can truly work to help rehabilitate offenders. Your suggestion should be novel and creative, yet it must also be realistic. d) Also, in Chapter Two,Mearsdiscusses what he refers to as the ‘no-captain problem.’ In your opinion, what are some of the most important characteristics of an effective criminal justice administrator? How can a leader of a criminal justice organization empower his or her staff yet at the same time take the charge of the organization and steer it in the right direction? Elaborate. It should be evident that you have reflected upon Mears’book. e) Also, why do you suppose most public agencies typically lack a meaningful research infrastructure to regularly evaluate criminal justice policies? What, if anything, could a criminal justice administrator do in order to improve this? Again, be creative yet realistic. f) Next, please point to one aspect of Chapter Three that you found to be of interest. Please explain how it enhances our understanding of the systems improvement solution and criminal justice policy. g) Once you have fully responded to every aspect of the above question, please be sure to post a critical thinking question to the class. Please remember, the question you pose should reflect graduate-level thinking. The question is meant to bring out the best in your fellow classmates. Remember to cite using APA. Students must also post a minimum of two follow-up comments throughout the week. For at least one of these follow-up comments, every student must answer a question posed by one of his or her classmates.

1. In Hartley’s Chapter 5, Reading 9: “Public Support for Getting Tough on Corporate Crime,” how was the sample that those researchers studied obtained? Whom did they study? Do you think this is a representative sample? What did the researchers do to make it more representative? (You may find the article through the Lamar library online journal. The reference is “Unnever, J. D., Benson, M. L., & Cullen, F. T. (2008). Public support for getting tough on corporate crime: Racial and Political divides. Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 45(2), 163-190.”) 2. In what condition multistage (a study is situated to achieve its purposes), the sampling procedure is appropriate, and can be the best method to have a representative sample? Please use Reading 10 (Hartley, p. 143-154) research as an example to explain it. (You may find the article through the Lamar library online journal. The reference is “Wilcox, P., Skubak Tillyer, M., & Fisher, B. (2009). Gendered opportunity? School-based adolescent victimization. Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 46, 245-269.”) 3. Why do some researchers have to use snowball sampling? Is this method justifiable under certain circumstances? Please explain as you are trying to teach us.

Topic: Try to think of a specific question that relates to either botany or environmental science (or both). Be as specific as possible. If you need tips/suggestions, please contact the instructor 2) Length: A minimum of 3 full pages. 3) General format: This is a research paper. You will be presenting a specific topic. Include research citations and references within your paper. Standard margins, standard type, etc. 4) Title page: Title page is needed. Include your name as well as the due date and the course info (ENVS 1402) 5) Abstract: APA style includes an abstract. This is a brief (1 – 2 paragraph) summary of your research paper. It is recommended that this section be the very last part of your paper you write. 6) Works cited page: Minimum of 2 outside resources 7) Citation style: APA. Be sure to include citations within the paper. You can use either direct quotes or paraphrasing information. 8) References: Approval is required for references. Some widely accepted sites include: National Geographic, Scientific American, Science Daily, and Nature. You may also use material from US Newspapers. In addition to the basic research, please make sure you address the following questions: 1) How does this topic relate to ENVS 1402? 2) How is this topic applicable to the average person?

This week we will consider strategies for selecting samples. In an everyday situation, we often use some examples to illustrate our points. While these examples can be convincing, their representativeness of the overall population is questioned. In other words, they can be special cases so that others can use some opposite examples against your points. In scientific research, we should choose cases that can “represent” the population we intend to study. For example, if you plan to investigate Houston Police Department officers’ attitudes towards the death penalty, you should consider how many officers to be selected for your research and how will they be chosen. In order to have a representative sample, there are lots of situations to consider so that your samples can represent the overall HPD population, not a biased sample. When we plan a survey, one of the key considerations is that we should have at least 100 cases for the survey in order for meaningful statistical analysis. If the population is large (i.e. thousands), OR if there are many variables to be surveyed, we should consider greater sampled cases. At least, each variable should have 10-30 cases on averages. How many samples do you plan to get for your research (explain why)? What is your sampling process? Please describe the process in as detail as possible. While you decide your sampling methods, you should carefully consider all the possible difficulties you may encounter. Please JUSTIFY your sampling process?

Choose a unit TED Talk from our D2L content and watch it. In 300-500 words explain how this talk relates to the material of the unit, what facts vs opinions were discussed, as well as your thoughts on the topic. You will need to be sure that you are stating new information for the discussion. To aid you in that each unit has several TED talks to choose from to ensure the conversation does not become redundant. See the assignment document for more grading detail and a grading rubric. Plagiarized writing will not receive credit.
Choose to watch and complete this assignment for one of the posted TED Talks for this unit. Then go to the unit discussion thread and in 300-500 words explain how this talk relates to the material of the unit. What were the facts vs opinions discussed in this talk? What do you think about the topic discussed in this talk? Do you agree with the speaker? Why or why not? Be sure that you are stating something new compared to your peers that have already done this assignment. That means that you will need to read through their posts to be sure that you are stating something in a different way or adding something new to the discussion. This also means that it would be wise to do this assignment earlier and look to comment on one of the TED Talks that has less posts already added to from your classmates (this is why I have multiple TED Talks – so there are more to choose from and ensure there are unique and different things you can add to the discussion). Looking up related information would be a good way to add something new to the discussion. This will be worth 20 points.
You will also be responsible for responding to one of your classmate’s posts regarding a different TED Talk than your post from above. Your comments should be at least 60 words and needs to add to the discussion. This will be worth 5 points.
Discussion posts and responses must be written in your own words (required length not to include long quotes). Work will be checked for plagiarism and plagiarized work will not receive credit. For more on plagiarism, see our course syllabus or D2L. * Be sure to cite the source of any information researched (MLA or APA format)

Please choose 3 questions out of the following 4 questions for discussion. 1. How would you conceptualize terrorism? (Hartley’s book pages 93-100 can be helpful) Under certain definitions of terrorism, why might the military operations of some countries be considered as terrorism, in essence making their governments terrorists? 2. Please conceptualize and operationalize “school violence?” Please carefully define this term so that it is not to be confused with those common terms (bully, for example) we use in daily conversations. 3. In Woff and colleagues’ paper (Hartley, P. 100-111), what do they say are some of the problems with comparing victimization rates inside prison versus rates of the general population not in prison? (you may find the article in Lamar’s online journal. The references for the article are “Wolff, H., Jing, S., & Bachman, R. (2008). Measuring victimization inside prisons: Questioning the question. Journal of Interpersonal Violence, 23(10), 1343-1362.”) 4. According to Batton and Kadleck’s research (Hartley, p. 111-126), what is the most difficult component of measuring racial profiling? What would you do to deal with the issue if you will be conducting a similar study? (you may find the article in Lamar’s online journal. The references for the article are “Batton, C., & Kadleck, C. (2004). Theoretical and methodological issues in racial profiling research. Police Quarterly, 7(1), 30-64.”)
