MY IDEA: For my final writing project, I was interested in researching and presenting about the lack of mental health resources for expecting mothers and mothers in postpartum care. I recently read an article on how pregnant and postpartum people experience symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis, and that many of these cases go frequently untreated and unnoticed even though poor maternal mental health can have serious long-term consequences for both parent and child. I would really like to use this project as an opportunity to raise awareness about mental health for new or expectant parents, especially because so many birthing people struggle with their mental health and they either hide it or downplay their symptoms. For this project, I would like to create a TED talk presentation to bring awareness to mothers mental health.
