FBA – BIP
The Functional Behavioral Assessment and the Behavior Intervention Plan are formal ways for parents, teachers, and other school professionals to work collaboratively to determine the best way to help a student behaviorally. Students with misbehavior that are unsuccessful with typical behavior supports or the school-wide discipline plan, may need extra support. A student who is disruptive, consistently off task, aggressive, or exhibit any number of behavioral problems may benefit from these plans. This process may consist of two separate meetings or one long meeting. However, they are more effective when utilized as a two step process.
The first portion of this process is the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA). It is intended to be a problem solving process used to define the misbehavior and determine the function of a student’s behavior. During the FBA the problem behavior will be clearly defined, including the severity and frequency. Much of the FBA is a formal brainstorming session, where participants attempt to determine the precursors to the misbehavior. In addition to “How is the student misbehaving,” it is a time to answer the question, “Why is the student misbehaving.” Participants should come to the meeting prepared to discuss times when there is not a disciple problem, and what occurs to make those times more positive. They should also be ready to discuss what occurs prior to the misbehavior to cause it.
Once the behaviors have been clearly identified through the FBA, as well as the precursors to the behavior, the participants will formulate a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP). The BIP is the actual plan created to help improve behavior. It is also a formal way to document interventions that are attempted. The plan must be specific and clearly stated, including the persons responsible for implementing interventions, rewards, or measurement of the intervention. Punishment should not be the only method used to address misbehavior. The interventions should focus on teaching the student new skills. Interventions may focus on teaching the student more acceptable behavior, modifying the classroom setting or curriculum, or modify the antecedent events. It may also introduce a behavioral intervention that uses reinforcements.
The Functional Behavioral Assessment and the Behavior Intervention Plan can be used for students in Special Education and it can be used for regular education students. However, there are not laws requiring a school to complete an FBA or a BIP on regular education students. Schools often see the effectiveness of the plans on Special Education Students and want to use them with Regular Education students as well. When an FBA or BIP is conducted regarding a student classified as a Special Education Student, it is a function of the IEP committee.

Using the same scenario you used in Part I and II of this project, you will now present your findings to your company or clinic staff, including CEOs (think about your audience).
Part A:
Provide a response to the following prompts.
Imagine your research team has been tasked with finding the correlation of 2 variables from your scenario. Part B:
Assume your research is complete and you have written your research article. Now it’s time to make a public presentation for your company/clinic.
Consider your audience and the language you will need to use to make this presentation clear for all participants.
Create a 10- to 12-slide Microsoft PowerPoint presentation (cover slides and references do not count in this number) using the information you gathered and submitted in Parts I and II.
Include the following in your presentation:
Describe the problem and provide some brief background information about the situation.
Explain the research hypothesis.
Describe your sample and your sampling method.
Explain the 4 steps of the research process you followed.
Define the critical value and the test statistic your analysis provided.
Include your scatterplot and correlation findings from Part A.
Provide the main finding of the study. What did you prove or fail to prove?
Provide recommendations based on your findings.
Each slide must have 4 to 5 bullet points with 4 to 5 words for each point plus speaker notes. The bulk of your explanation will go in the speaker notes. This is where you will write and put what you would say when giving this presentation to your audience. This is an academic presentation; therefore, keep the bells and whistles to a minimum and make this a clean, professional-looking presentation. It is a visual presentation, so tasteful and related images are appropriate.
Format any citations in your presentation according to APA guidelines. Also, if photos are used, they need to be referenced according to APA guidelines.

Assessment of Context
Part 1 of the Capstone Project starts with an assessment of the context in which you are conducting your capstone project. This could be your field placement, place of employment, or local community. Drawing on generalist skills, this assignment reviews the policy and context within which the social work intervention will occur. It should include:
1. Description of the context (topics you could include: name and mission of the agency; tax status: for-profit, non-profit, or public; population/community served; whether staff members are generally from the target population/community; presence of social work within the organization; annual budget; important events that have happened in the agency’s past/recent history, community demographics, community needs assessment data)

Problem Identification
This section of the Capstone Project introduces the selection of client system and assessment of the presenting problem for intervention. This will provide an overview of the client system identified for intervention and related problem(s) to be addressed. These potential topics can be at the individual, family, group, community, organizational, or societal levels. Please note that the goal of the overall capstone project is for implementation of the intervention, and discussion with field supervisors can help ensure that the intervention plan is appropriate for the client and setting.
1. Description of the identified client system. Who is the client (individual, group community)?
2. Description and results of assessment activities (biopsychosocial, community needs assessment, other formalized assessment).
3. What is the level of intervention and why: individual, family, group community, organization, society? This is where you will identify the level at which you will target your capstone project intervention.
