PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to:
Develop student’s knowledge of the principles of pathophysiology
To utilise knowledge of pathophysiology to discuss common dermal phenomena.
INSTRUCTIONS
Chose ONE of the following to be the topic for your report;
a] Why does inflammation of the skin sometimes lead to a darkening of skin pigment?
b] What is the process, whereby extreme cold at high altitudes can lead to gangrene?
c] Can foetal wounds heal without a scar?
d] Why do some people develop granulomas after having filler injections?
e] Why do some people develop pressure ulcers when they are confined to the bed or chair for long periods of time?
f] Why do some people develop keloid scars following an injury to the ear?
Begin by familiarising yourself with any unfamiliar terms in your topic
Search for journal articles on your chosen topic, please stick to using information from quality sources, such as peer-reviewed journal articles;
Your report will need to address, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:
A clear and detailed answer to the topic question.^
A demonstration of understanding of how the pathophysiology of cell injury, inflammation and/or repair relates to the topic question*.
Once you have gathered the information you need write your report:
Keep in mind that this assessment is used so we can see that you have understood concepts covered in this unit – it needs to have suitable detailed and in-depth discussion of the more challenging principles of pathophysiology;
Ideally what you write should be informed by reading a wide range of articles on the topic.
Write in your own words to demonstrate your understanding – changing a few of words in a sentence from another source is NOT writing it in your own words. Avoid using any direct quotes, there will be no need for those in a report like this – put it into your own words and reference at the end of each sentence.
Use a professional writing style that is suitable for an intended audience of health professionals.
You can include figures (images, graphics, charts etc…) and tables [your own tables rather than those from other sources] where appropriate – these should, however, be discussed within the text of your report and should not be used in lieu of a detailed explanation. They also need to be labelled and referenced in accordance with the APA style.
Include a wide range# of in text references and a reference list in APA style.
^ You have a limited word count – Focus on information that is relevant to the topic question. Remember, this unit is focused on pathophysiology, so make your focus answering the topic by talking about the more complex aspects of the pathophysiological processes, such as cell signaling pathways, chemical mediators etc..
*The pathology concepts that relate to each topic may vary – for example some may relate to the pathophysiology of cell injury, whilst others might replate to the pathophysiology of inflammation or repair. You do not have to write about all of the pathology concepts covered in the unit. Just focus on the one that relates to your topic. I have specifically chosen topics that relate to cell injury OR inflammation OR repair, not all three.
# Aim to have different references at the end of nearly every sentence.
#I will often be asked whether references need to be within the last five years. The short answer to this is no, they do not. The longer answer is it is a bit more nuanced than that:
We do want you to use the most recent and up to date information about the topic your are writing about. In some instances this will be within the past few years. However, many of the topics we give you have a lot of the key research on them conducted more than five years ago. To restrict yourself to the last five years will be excluding some of the crucial information that is available.
Our best advice is to start with the most recent articles and work your way back. If an article is from a number of years ago, look to see if there is something more recent. Don’t use only old references, but please don’t ignore these altogether. please refer to the rubric criteria, it’s in uploaded file, please i want full marks for this assessment.
