For this assignment, you will:
Choose a site you think will produce an interesting soundscape, and where you can safely sit and listen undisturbed.
Visit that site at two different times of day (dawn and dusk, day and night for example), and record for 5 minutes. While you are recording listen and takes notes describing your experience.
Listen to the two recordings. Compare the experience of listening at the site and listening to the recordings.
Edit the recording in a sound file editing software. These are basic editing moves like splicing off rattles at the beginning and end and adjusting volume.
Write a short (500 word) reflection on the experience:
Describe your chosen site. Why did you choose the site? What surprised you about the site when sitting and listening?
Compare your experience listening at site and listening to the recording. Did you focus on different details? Use Shafer’s 3 elements to help you describe the soundscape and explain the differences.

Many of you have heard of the voice treatment technology called Autotune. However, you may not be aware of the history and the scope of its use. Watch this video for a primer. After watching the video, participate in the discussion of Autotune, its merits, and the ethics of using it.

Example:
This particular song is called Moonlight Sonata by the classical composer Beethoven. The tone of the song is very dark and sad. The tempo is slow and it sounds like someone has died. This music makes me feel upset and it reminds me of the death of my father. There is only a sad piano sound playing in this piece, as well. Outside this class, I probably would never listen to this piece again because I like to listen to uplifting music.
