Discuss the differences you hear between the “swing,” “bebop,” and early “Latin Jazz” examples. These genres are very different from each other. It is a little ironic considering most all the bebop musicians careers started in the swing era playing in swing bands. In what ways is bebop different from swing? Why is bebop different than swing? What makes Latin Jazz sound “Latin?” Please address ALL examples in your response.

Instructions:
Listen to the following musical selection, then answer BOTH question prompts in the text box below.
Assignment Prompt 1:Write three descriptive sentences about the music (“facts”) after you listen.
List them:
1.
2.
3.
Evaluation Prompt 1:Use complete sentences and be specific. Be sure not to use reaction or judgment words in your descriptions. Tell where the fact occurs by using a timing or a reference to the relative location of the event. For example, “There is a loud outburst of trumpets just before the end.” When listening to musical selections on youtube, use video timings to be precise about WHEN you hear a fact. Always use complete sentences and avoid generalities such as “I heard a variety of instruments” or “The music went from fast to slow to fast” or “The music was sometimes loud and sometimes soft.” Facts that are too general or too vague will not receive points in assignments.
(More examples: (1) “This music sounded soft at the beginning.” (2) “At 2 minutes, this music was sharp and harsh sounding.”)
Be sure to AVOID using FEELING descriptions or judgments for your FACT statements.
Examples of incorrect statements:
“The music sounded sad at 1 minute.”
“When the trumpets entered, the music was happy.”
“The music sounded ugly from 30 to 45 seconds.”
“The music was beautiful at the end.”
Assignment Prompt 2:Now write two reaction statements about the music (“feelings”).
List them:
1.
2.
Evaluation Prompt 2:Use complete sentences and be specific. When listening to your CDs, use timings to pinpoint when the feeling occurred. ALWAYS qualify a feeling statement by referring to yourself. In other words, remember to include yourself in the statement and to state the objective element of the music that produced the response you describe.
Examples: (Note italicized and bold references to oneself)
“The music sounded sad to me at 1:30 minutes.”
“The music made me feel happy at the beginning.”
“I feel happy when I listen to the music in the middle featuring the brass instruments.”
If you would like to give a value judgment about the music, tell us why you have this opinion by describing WHY you feel that way. (Examples: “I think this music is beautiful, because it makes me feel tingly all over.” Or “ I hate this music, because I feel angry when I’m listening to it.”

FIND THE MUSICAL ELEMENTS OF A PIECE!
Remember to refer to the score of the piece. After listening, search the score for the five musical elements, watch/listen to the video posted below: Remember to choose only one of them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weFJHtcxJt0&t=5s&ab_channel=ABCClassic – Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah by Handel OR https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqWUcnWCpUU&t=3s&ab_channel=AuroraSnefrid. -Minuet in G Major by J.S. (Please note there is a recitative before the aria begins). Use the Musical Elements template provided to record your answers (you can work on them and scan, upload).
Be sure to choose only one piece for this assignment and listen to one of the links I have provided for you to look over the score. The video links are shown below.

Step 1: Read the assigned section of this article
Read pages 217-31 of Dylan Robinson’s “Enchantment’s Irreconcilable Connection” (attached). I have omitted the bibliography entry I usually place at the beginning of readings because part of this assignment is figuring out how to cite this source by consulting How to Write about Music. This reading is a chapter from an edited collection. I have provided the first few pages of this book because they contain information you will need to cite this source correctly.
Step 2: Identify your main takeaway from reading this article
In this article, Dylan Robinson reflects on how participating in Idle No More protests has changed his ways of thinking about political protest and what it can do. How has this reading prompted you to think differently about political protests, music’s role in political protests, Indigenous Peoples, or Indigenous traditions than you did before? Don’t attempt to address all these topics in the paragraph you write. Pick the main thing you took away from this reading and write about that.
Step 3: Write a paragraph about that takeaway
Your paragraph should be around 350 words. Please include a word count at the bottom of your submission. Your paragraph must cite the reading at least two times. One must be a paraphrase, where you express an idea from the article in your own words. One must be a brief quotation (a sentence or less). Every time you draw from ideas from the article, you will need to insert a footnote in Chicago Style. The Robinson reading is a chapter in an edited volume so take particular note about how to cite one of these. Do not use online citation tools

1) Read the provided articles and briefly summarize what you think the authors are trying to convey.
2) Find an artist who fits into the discussion by one of the authors, then discuss an important work of theirs through the lens provided by one of the authors. For example:
A) How does “Old Town Road” by Lil’ Nas X, an openly gay artist, question the classically masculine idea of traditional country music?
B) Was the placing of Britney Spears into a conservatorship an example of a female artist being treated differently than a male artist? (i.e. If Justin Timberlake had shaved his head, would he have faced a similar reaction?)
*You do not need to write about Britney Spears of Lil’ Nas X – these are just examples of how you might relate an artist to one of these topics!
3) Discuss whether you think the articles present a problem in contemporary society/media or not, and if so, what do you see as a way to address the issues, or what may come in the future. I don’t expect you to solve any of these issues! Just consider them.
4) You should properly cite any sources you use in your paper. I use APA formatting, to which you can find a guide here at the Purdue Online Writing Center. If you are more comfortable with another citation format, you may use that instead.
You only have to discuss the article you choose, however, you might find it useful to consider the articles together – they share an underlying theme of identity, and it might help your thought process if you consider them all.
Because these issues are about sound and music as a whole, you are not required to select an artist that specifically is classified as an “electronic” artist; however, electronica and pop has many artists that fit these categories and I would recommend choosing them.
I have provided a list of artists who you might consider for this topic, however, you are free to choose whomever you like.
Grading Criteria:
For this project you may choose to write a traditional paper, or you may submit an audio/video recording. If you choose to write, your paper should be 800 – 1200 words. If you choose to submit an audio/video work, it should be 5 – 7 minutes.
*If you choose to include audio/video samples or clips, they do not count toward your total time.
Point Breakdown: (100 Points)
Summary of article – 15 points
Descriiption of Artist/Work – 20 points
Relation of Artist/Work to Article – 40 points
Discussion of Impact on Current Media – 15 points
Followed Instructions – 5 points
