Arguably the highest accolade a film score can win is the Academy Award for Best Original Score. This award is presented annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It is intended to acknowledge quality music (usually non-diegetic/underscoring) for a film in any given year. Below is a varied list of films that won the Academy Award for Best Original Score:
Black Panther (2018)
Choose one of these films for your final paper. Watch the entire film while taking notes about the soundtrack and its overall effect. Did this film deserve to win the Academy Award for Best Original Score? Why or why not? To strengthen your document, analyze three (3) scenes—with timings indicated—you believe best support your argument. The document should be 3-4 pages in length, double-spaced, in 12-point font, and with 1-inch margins all around. Think of this assignment like an expanded, supersized version of a Screening Report. You should discuss the music (how it sounds, diegetic/non-diegetic status, instruments used, leitmotifs, etc.), the music’s function, and its overall impact on the viewer. I am interested in reading your thoughts and your interpretations.

Music experiences are common in a young child’s life. Music is a natural avenue
Music experiences are common in a young child’s life. Music is a natural avenue for a child’s self-expression. The challenge in planning music experiences for young children is to overcome the “adult” approach to music so you can share musical experiences with children in a way that preserves and encourages their innate spontaneous and open attitude toward music.
Appropriate musical experiences for young children must first take into account the child’s developmental level. The developmental levels of all children in the group must also be included in planning musical experiences for children. It is important to include activities from each area of music — singing, rhythm, instruments, movement, listening and musical concepts.
Language is a part of a child’s total development. As there is in physical growth, there is a definite pattern of development related to the child’s growth in language. Language development involves growth of the four skills of speaking, listening, writing, and reading. Each of these skills can develop at different rates in each individual child. Teachers need to understand each child’s developmental level for each of these language skills in planning developmentally appropriate language experiences.
Emerging literacy refers to the time immediately before a child learns to read printed symbols as well as to the continuous development of pre-reading skills that begin at birth. Prewriting skills are also considered a part of emerging literacy. Learning to write involves fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Reading skills develop gradually through developmentally appropriate activities in the early childhood program.

Jamie Oldaker helped bring country artist Ronnie Dunn to stardom, played a pivotal role in revitalizing Eric Claptons career post Cream, and his influence may have even brought reggae and Bob Marley into the public eye. (topic created by Fall ’22 student Samuel Murray)
In the 1950s, Rock and roll began to see success as a counter-culture genre. Initially enjoyed by a niche market, only being played by a small number of radio stations, it exploded in the mid-1950s as it found itself as the poster child of teen rebellion. As rock evolved an increasing number of artists fell into destructive lifestyles of extreme drug and alcohol abuse. The personal lives of many artists became severely damaged. Being a rock and roll artist led to mounting pressure to “practice what you preach.” Indulging in such a culture brought about many premature deaths, horrendous crimes, and life-altering events, thus tragically ending many careers prematurely.
