In this assignment, students will identify, examine, and address observations on Race and Ethnicity within their respective majors. Students will address how identified observations have impacted, created or contributed to potential problems or discrepancies within their major and/or careers.
No sources needed for this assignment but students will need to explain their observations and opinions. If sources are used, sources can include peer reviewed scholarly journals, trade journals, and popular magazines (New Yorker, The Economist, Harvard Business review, etc.). Conduct your own independent research to find an example of an engineering failure that resulted from non-compliance with ASME Codes and Standards. Equally acceptable is an engineering failure that pre-dated and served as inspiration for ASME Codes and Standards. In a brief, 1-2 page failure analysis, describe:
the mechanical system and surrounding infrastructure,
the events leading up to the failure,
the reason for the failure (including what ASME Code or Standard was violated or needed),
the aftermath of the failure including lessons learned,
what could have been done to prevent the failure, and
the societal impact of the failure.
