In his book, The Confederate Battle Flag, John Coski claims that it makes sense to think of the
Confederate battleflag as a “Second American Flag.” Do you agree with that argument? Why or
why not? Use specific historical events and trends to illustrate your points. Hint: Even if you do
not agree with Coski’s argument, you must show that you understand it
Discussion, John M. Coski, The Confederate Battle Flag: America’s Most Embattled Emblem
During the Civil War, why did some white southerners begin to object to the original “Stars and Bars,” leading
to the adoption of what most people today call the “Confederate flag?”
What did Confederate veteran Carlton McCarthy say the battle flag symbolized, or didn’t symbolize? What did
it mean to him? Does Coski fully accept that answer?
Was there ever a time when the battle flag was separate from the Confederate “Cause” itself? The “Cause”
What was it? – slavery?; constitutional liberty? something else?
What did southerners of the Civil War era say the war was about? (This may not have a one-word answer!)
What did they think they were fighting for? Could these two questions have different answers?????
When southerners displayed the battle flag in the immediate postwar period, what were they doing? Did they
think they were threatening the union? Were they trying to reimpose slavery?
Maintain white supremacy? Show that they had not forgotten their comrades and loved ones?
During Reconstruction, if northerners objected to the Confederate flag, why did they object? Did they see it as a
symbol of treason, or of racism?
How was the flag used towards the end of Reconstruction and in the 1880s, up until World War II?
Did the UCV and UDC approve?
What was the northern response to the flag in this time period (end of Reconstruction through WWII)?
Why did southern servicemen display the Confederate flag during World War II?
Coski says that after World War II, the flag transformed from a symbol of the status quo to a symbol of protest.
What does he mean by that? How was it a symbol of the status quo before?
If Confederate veterans could come back to life and observe the debates we have today on the Confederate flag,
what would they find strange or puzzling?
Ch. 12 – What does Coski say was common about the outcome in all 4 statewide Confederate flag debates
(South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi)?
Why does Coski call the Confederate flag the “Second American Flag?” Is he right?
Try to list all the meanings the flag has had: How many of those messages/meanings are “American;”
how many of them are only “southern,” but not “American?”
What solutions does Coski propose? Do they seem reasonable to you?

Auguste Rodin’s The Burghers of Calas is probably among my top ten favorite sculptures. It is a thing of beauty and I was awestruck the first time I saw it in person.
How does this particular sculpture differ from earlier European sculptures/monuments?

I need you to write a short essay using the reading attached (Clarence-Smith). You need to choose one of the following questions to answer in the thesis (with 3 reasons) and each body paragraph has a topic sentence with 1 of those 3 reasons:
1)    After reading this article, do you agree with Bernard Lewis that “Islamic abolitionism is a contradiction in terms?”
2)    Based on your readings, including this one, how useful is Marshall Hodgson’s idea of “Islamicate” culture (the culture associated with, but not necessarily derived from, Islam), in understanding slavery in Arabia?
3)    What were the main arguments used by Islamic “Modernists” in opposing or limiting slavery in Islamic societies?
4)    Overall, which factor was more important in Islamic abolitionism – intellectual trends within Islam, or external pressure from European powers?
You need to have an introduction, 3 body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You need to include evidence/quotes from the reading. I have attached the rubric and an essay I wrote from a previous reading for reference(Hunwick Narrative).

My topic is from the theme Material Culture, something related to Jade in pre-modern and the title is (The Controversial Significance of Jade in Pre-Modern China) -> for example, one controversial topic that has been discussed is the extent of jade’s influence on social hierarchies and power structures.
Some scholars argue that jade played a significant role in reinforcing social hierarchies, with its ownership limited to the elite class. They believe that the display of exquisite jade objects during important events and ceremonies served to emphasize the wealth and prestige of the ruling class, further perpetuating social inequality.

Instructions
During this era the culture was changing. Christmas and Thanksgiving became national holidays (THANK YOU PRESIDENT GRANT). Other holidays and special days would be created, some to make certain immigrant groups feel a part of this country. We now have all sorts of special months or days designed to help American society become more inclusive.
Take one of these days, or months, and find out the beginnings of its celebration in the United States. The exceptions will be holidays that celebrate the USA so NO to the 4th of July, NO to Memorial Day, NO to Veterans Day, NO to President Day or No to Thanksgiving. Don’t do those. Don’t. Celebrate them just don’t do them for this assignment. Don’t.
It does NOT have to be a day off holiday, it can just be a special day of commemoration.
Why did it become a celebration? When did it become a celebration? What immigrant or group of people was it created to celebrate? Give a few reasons why. Cynical political calculations are a good reason, if someone was trying to woo voters that is a legitimate reason. I am looking at you Columbus Day.
Answer this in about 250 words.
I want source notes (not to be included in your word count) either footnotes or a bibliography source). Wikipedia is OK with me for this assignment.
