Q1.
Related to our Expressive Typography assignment this week, I want you to watch the Netflix documentary about Jonathan Hoefler a type designer who’s created many famous typefaces in the last few decades. If you don’t have a Netflix account, please let me know
I got really inspired by this documentary and now I have a new look at typography.
Please write a paragraph about your impressions of Hoefler and his work
Please comment on at least ONE other person’s post
Peer’s post:
For me, first of all, his passion for his work is fascinating; his attention to the details and his dedication. I have never looked at typography like this and it seemed really simple for me but now I understand that designing a font takes a lot of time and needs and requires a lot of obsession and precision. Typography is important not only in graphics and art but in all aspects of our daily lives.
Q2.
Post any examples interesting type that you saw (either in person or online) and write a little paragraph about why you found it to be interesting. For this assignment, the type doesn’t have to be created digitally, so it can include things like hand-painted signs, etc.
Q3. Watch the short documentary (15:15) below on Paul Rand, a designer who’s created an astounding amount of high-profile logos (among other things) over many decades.
Please write a paragraph about your impressions on Paul Rand and his work, and comment one peer’s post
Peer’s post: I find interesting that Paul Rand wasn’t satisfied with his work at time. He prints a brochure for his clients, not just one or two prints but a full catalogue to capture his idea of simplicity and determination. It was not just the logo but also how it could be applied to other forms of presentation with, shirts, other lettering, and font size. I find it inspiring of how much thought and emotion goes into making a logo for Paul Rand. He did just create something and moved on but left a creative legacy that many people find motivating.
Q4. Since we’re working on some logos this week, I’d like for you to post an interesting logo that you saw (either in person or online) and write a little paragraph about why you found it to be interesting.
Q5. Post an interesting design that you saw (either in person or online) and write a little paragraph about why you found it to be interesting. The visual can be an ad, a billboard, a poster, basically any kind of a designed image.
Q6. This week look for interesting designs applied to apparel. T-shirts are a big one, but also hats, jackets, shoes, etc. Start in your own closet: what kind of designs we choose to wear on our clothes says a lot about ourselves and our interests. I’m specifically looking for designs/visuals applied to apparel; not the design of the apparel itself. I hope that makes sense–I look forward to seeing what you share!
Q7. look for interesting online ads! There’s no shortage of online ads, am I right? I’m on Instagram the most, and pretty much every other post is an ad. I’m curious what social media platforms you use the most, if any–please list, if you care to.
Q8. This week look for interesting package design. It could be the structure and/or just the graphics. It might be easier to spot these in physical stores rather than online, so next time you’re at Target or whatever, spend a little more time in the aisles to see what catches your eye!
Q9. I want you to be on the lookout for multipage documents like brochures, magazines, and books. You will most likely have to find physical examples that you can take pics of to post, as I don’t want to see just a cover. I want to see at least a cover and one spread.
Q10. Find designs that use color in an interesting way. They don’t necessarily have to use a LOT of color either.
Q 11. Post any examples interesting type that you saw (either in person or online) and write a little paragraph about why you found it to be interesting. For this assignment, the type doesn’t have to be created digitally, so it can include things like hand-painted signs, etc.
Q.12 As inspiration for our magazine project, I wanted to introduce you to the pioneering LA-based Asian American magazine and retail store Giant Robot It started out as a scrappy zine created by two college students who wanted to create the kind of content they felt were being sidelined or ignored by mainstream magazines. It went on to become a powerful cultural force in LA, California, and beyond. Alas, the magazine is no longer around, but the store still is.
Here is the link to the PBS Artbound Giant Robot documentary
Write a paragraph about your impressions about the documentary.
Please comment on at least one other person’s post.
Peer’s post: I found it very interesting learning about how the magazine started. It was interesting to learn about how founders of it met and what their personal interests were. I also found it interesting about how Japanese culture wasn’t really looked at in the US today. I think it would’ve been very cool to check out this magazine if it was still out.
Q13. We’re coming down to the wire! Post an interesting design that you saw (either in person or online) and write a little paragraph about why you found it to be interesting. The visual can be an ad, a billboard, a poster, basically any kind of a designed image.
